"3, 2, 1, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to our Hayat, Happy birthday to youuuuu. Hiphip-Hurray Hiphip Hurray"
Everyone from the lobby applauded as I came out of the elevator, my 17th birthday it was.
And my second birthday celebrated in hospital.
Leukaemia starts of in the bone marrow, as it then spreads into the blood while it slowly builds up.
Many people don't get symptoms for about a few years, and unfortunately I was one of those many people."I love thisss you guys thank youuu" i pulled in Firdaus who was my chemo buddy from ever since I joined the clinic. But she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, a cancer that starts off in the obvious, the ovaries and then decides to lead the way through to the stomach and the pelvis. And when it's at that stage, it's more fatal and can be very much difficult to treat.
Especially for an 19 year old."Yallah hayati, cut the cake and make a wish"
My mum said as she passed the knife to me, the cake was a red velvet cake covered in chocolate. More appropriate of description would be drowned in mud. Me, firdaus and Sadeeq had stayed up yesterday night in the kitchen area decorating the cake, even though it was more like. 'Add a bit of every coloured sprinkle everywhere" and tried to write out 'Happy birthday Hayat' using MNMS. Which was very impressive I must say.I blew out the candles without needing to make a wish, because I already knew that no matter how many birthday candles I blow out with a wish, only Allah Swt really can grant my wishes.
I cut the cake and put a slice for everyone but gave Firdaus, Sadeeq and I a bigger slice, we WeRe the ones who decorated it after all."You complete us Hayat you complete us" sadeeq let out as he took a bite of the cake,
"You don't say, how so?" I let out with extra sass on the 'Say & so' while flicking my hijab across my shoulder which had dipped itself into the cake.
"You're now 17, I'm 18 and Firdaus is 19, so if it wasn't for you, our age gap wouldn't be that mesmerising" he said in a matter of fact tone.
"But how about we not forget about Amal, even though she's having the time of her life now with her fiancé, she's still part of our quad" I said as I seated myself on a bean bag facing the both of them.
"If she's not here then she's not part of our topics, case is closed. You are now dismissed Sadeeq" Firdaus said in defence.
"You see Firdaus gets it" Sadeeq commented to me with a little giggle.
"Okay then, when the next time I'm on call with Amal. You both aren't allowed to talk to her. And that's on fairness" I replied to the both of them as I scolded the both.
"Hmph deal" in unison they said.
Everyone came past as they finished their cake and wished me a happy birthday, with however awkward it was I just nodded and said thank you. All the cards were with comments like 'hope you fight cancers butt before a teen does'
'CANT wait for your 18th birthday to be somewhere other than this lobby'
To be fair I actually loved this whole,
'Celebrate your birthday with the home made cake and your two most meaningful friends and your little family you made here' even if it wasn't home, everyone here made it feel better than home."Hayati I'm going to go check on Noor and see if she's woken up so we can get going after a bit. And I need to pick up Firdaus's brother and Kamal because they need to go to their soccer practice"
She gave me and Firdaus a side hug and ruffled Sadeeqs light brown hair as she went to the elevator.
