As soon as I walk in the school gates, the familiar rush of excitement and dread fills me up. I've only changed schools once before in my life, when I moved from Portland to Hastings, but it was nothing like this. The buildings, which seem to resemble castle spires, tower over the sparkling paved ground casting long shadows over the students who are jumping out of their cars and scuttling inside to find their friends. Jack gave me directions last night, but I've forgotten every single one of them. Just my luck.
I walk down the path and around a small island in the middle of the road, where all the cars seem to be stoping to let out their children. Girls then kiss their parents goodbye, wave to their younger siblings (or if they have older ones, try to wave only to be ignored completely) and head off across the crossing, and down either of two paths. The first path, a curling walkway which leads students in front of the spire building, or the second path, which leads them behind the spire building. Stuck for what to do, I watch as a girl with chestnut sun kissed skin jumps out of a sliver volo and what must be her two younger sisters clamber out after her. She looks about my age, her flipped wavy hair sitting just below her shoulders. She has a permanent scowl on her face and as she turns her head to the side to place her backpack higher on her shoulders I catch a glance of three tight braids.
"Bye Chelsie and Amanda." Their mother waves through an open window. The two youngest girls wave back. They run off giggling up the path leading in front of the spire building. "Bye momma!"
"Bye Brook!" The woman calls out to the braid girl. The girl's scowl deepens and she continues to walk away, ignoring her mother. I watch as the woman in the car frowns sadly, looking after her daughter with a worried stare. I look away before she catches me staring, but I hear her wind up her window and pull away.
"You got a problem?" I turn to find braid girl looking down at me. I notice she'd got several necklaces, a nose piece, multiple earrings plus a few snake rings that are all on her left hand. She'd holding her phone, a small apple phone which must be a few years old because it's got a pealing screen protector, and a cracked screen. I swear this girl is braking about fifty school rules.
I feel my eyes flicker nervously. "No."
"Good. Mind your own bloodly damn business." She sneers and I catch a hit of a southern drawl. She stalks off with a huff, and I can't help but ask if she's American as I run to catch up. I see her eye widen in shock, and I can tell she's heard my accent, but her surprise disappears in a second.
"What did I tell you? I would watch yourself. I'm not in the mood for a chat with someone who has so much disrespect." She snaps. God this girl needs to get a grip. I've done absolutely nothing to her.
"Brooklyn!" A girl, whom I might have mistaken for a teacher if she wasn't wearing school uniform comes up behind her. She looks very familiar, with slightly styled wavy black hair, and bright narrow blue eyes. In addition to a black blazer, which I assume is part of the winter uniform (To be honest I'm not even going to be surprised if it turns out they have a fall and spring uniform as well) she also is wearing a shiny letter P badge. "Is that really necessary? You need to apologise to this poor girl."
I feel like snapping at this other girl for calling me that, but I honestly can't be bothered.
"Whatever Ruby. You're not even a year 9 prefect." And with that Brooklyn is off, stalking down the hall with her phone in one hand.
"You need to get rid of that phone Brooklyn! And all that jewellery, otherwise it's detention for you!" Brooklyn just juts out her rude finger and keeps walking.
Ruby sighs looking after her, and suddenly she remembers that I'm still standing there. She turns and looks at the clipboard that she's holding before introducing herself. "Hi there, I'm Ruby Sato, and I'm the year 10 prefect helping out today. I'm assuming you're a new student, because I've never seen you before." She smiles. "What year are you going into?"
"Year 9." I mutter, because I'm nervous. She checks her clipboard.
"Ah, Yule Davis! The only one on this list!" Thanks for reminding me. She traces the paper with her pen. "And your welcome buddy is... Oh dear."
"What?" I lean over her shoulder and spot the name she's looking at. Brooklyn Moore.
"I'm assuming that there's only one Brooklyn in year 9 right?" I answer for Ruby. "And that I just met her?"
She purses her lips. "Yep. That's Brook. She's quite the handful. She didn't even sign up to be a buddy, her homeroom teacher did. And I doubt she knows." Ruby gives me an encouraging smile. "I'll show you to your homeroom. Don't worry, Brook just takes time to warm up."
"I don't think that's even possible. That girl's eyes were cold. She looked like a deathly tiger." I shutter.
Ruby laughs, and I turn surprised. She seem so uptight I didn't even think that it was possible to make her laugh.
"She's made quite uproar around here that girl. But she'll warm up. Eventually."
