Glimpse of Forever

I put on my mask and was about to flee when I sensed someone on my trail. I immediately recognized the aura, but because I couldn’t come up with the reason why that person would follow me, I pretended not to notice.

I scanned Isla’s perimeter, jumping from one tree to another. The person was still on my trail. I narrowed my eyes. A spy, perhaps? No. It isn’t possible. I could read auras, and the aura of that person is not tainted. Then why? And how could I reveal the agenda?

I decided to experiment. For four consecutive nights, I masked myself and scanned Isla’s perimeter like a routine. I was still being followed by the person with the same aura.

On the fourth day, I knew that I had to do something. I played with that person by going around, to and from, and along a certain path in Isla. That person must have gotten confused. I made it look like I disappeared, but in reality, I was just behind.

“Looking for me?” I asked cheerfully.

She jumped in surprise and panic, but she got a hold of herself before she could let out a tiny scream. Then again, it isn’t like her to scream.

She blinked, lost for words.

I smirked, folding my hands behind my back. “If you’re on someone’s trail, the most important thing is to mask your aura. That way, you won’t be detected. Second, protect your back. You never know if you’re the one being followed instead. Third, don’t just jump. Flee. If you’re in a mission right now and the one you’re following found you, you’d be dead.”

“Master,” she said, dropping on her knees.

“What is it, Carmine? Why have you been following me?”

She didn’t speak. I waited for about a minute, but she still didn’t speak.

“You know it’s not wise to keep something from me, right?” I said. “I’d know about it, anyway, but I want to hear it directly from you.”

She started removing her mask, but I held up my palm.

“Don’t. Keep it on. A spy might appear.”

She inhaled. “Spy?” she whispered and glanced around.

“Nobody is around,” I said, “yet.”

“Master,” she bagan.

“What is it?”

“Let us flee.”

I blinked. “Excuse me?”

She started shaking her head vehemently. “Baka maulit na naman. Hindi na maaaring maulit iyon. Sapat na ang pinsalang idinulot niyon.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Ang pinsala, Master. Hindi na po maaaring maulit ang pinsalang iyon. Umalis na tayo mula sa lugar na ito, Master. Umalis na tayo.”

“Carmine,” I said, sensing a disturbance in her aura. She was in panic. I have always pegged her as the most levelheaded one in my team, so seeing her like this was a bit unusual. “Calm down.”

She was still shaking her head vehemently. “Master, umalis na tayo rito. Pakiusap. Hindi na maaaring maulit ang nangyari noon. Hindi na namin kakayanin.”

I frowned. What is she talking about? Before I could ask further, I sensed four different auras.

“Carmine Cheng!” Scarlet’s panicked voice emerged from the trees. “Quick, quick! Get her!”
