We tip-toe around the paper-covered ground as we make it out of the exit. People are shouting and hollering all around, celebrating the end of the school year.
"Look at them!" Elle laughs, and I look up, spotting Sanchez and his football possie half-naked with crimson words across their chests that together spell out "I did my time."
My brows arch with slight amusement.
Jayden sighs from next to me, his mood sullen. I know what he is thinking about, so does Ellyn. But we don't know what to say. We meet each other's gaze and look away just as quickly. Amanda's letter set us free to some extent, but we still feel ashamed of how things turned out the last couple of weeks of her life. As friends, we failed her.
"Manda would have been so proud of you," Elle says softly. "And I am sure she is. She's up there somewhere smiling down at us."
He nods, looking torn. And I feel that familiar sense of guilt bubbling just below the surface.
"She deserved to see this. She would have loved it." He says, looking around. "I just... I wish she were here."
"She is," I tell him. "She's always with you. All she would ever talk about was how amazing of a brother you were. She would want you to enjoy this. Besides, she used to always say you looked like a blobfish when you got sad. It's not a good look, man."
He nods, managing a small chuckle.
"She did say that." He agrees.
Ellyn looks at me and gives me a grateful smile.
"Pre-grad party at Groove Shore!" Sanchez shouts, handing out flyers to a group of girls. "It's on the south side of the lake, in case you didn't know. Be there at 8. Drinks on the house."
The girls squeal over the flyers as he heads over to another group.
Then I sense her. That something inside me that tells me when she is around suddenly starts buzzing. I turn around, searching.
When I find her, she is making her way over to us with Stefani. She's in a white sundress and jean jackets, smiling brightly as the sun hits her from behind, making her blonde hair glow golden around her like a halo. And for a second, I think she can't be real.
"Congrats, losers! We gonna get fucked up tonight or what?" Stefani says when they reach us. "I heard the guys are having a party at the shore."
Jess throws her arms around me, and my arms wrap around her waist, lifting her up as our lips meet.
