Jake heard a knock on his door. He went up and opened the door immediately knowing it was Nari. He smiled brightly at her and greeted her. Nari did the same and then handed him a plastic container.
'I made cookies and thought of giving you some.' She said smiling. Jake opened the container and a childish grin made it's way to his face. 'Cinnamon roll-cookies, I love 'em.' He exclaimed. His reaction made Nari smile wider.
'Then enjoy!' The girl said. 'You're not gonna eat them with me?' Jake asked slightly pouting. 'No, I'm sorry. I have to visit someone.' Jake nodded in understanding. 'Tell me if you like it. I'll make more if you do.' Nari said and waved before turning around to leave. 'Bye!' Jake said before closing the door.-------
No one that comes to this place ever comes in with a smile. The only exception of this, is Nari. This is the only place where Nari can see her mother. She walked into the big building and approached the receptionist. 'Hello Miss, I came here to visit Ming Chaewon.' Nari said still keeping her smile. 'Can I ask you who you are?' The receptionist asked. 'I'm her daughter, Ming Nari.'
'Oh, follow me Ms. Ming.' The receptionist walked Nari to her mother's room. Nari took a deep breath and smiled before entering the room.'Hi mom!' she said to the woman sitting on a chair near the window reading a book.
'Nari! Hi sweetheart, how are you?' her mother said while hugging her.
'I'm great. I brought you your favorite cookies.' Nari said after breaking the hug and giving her the container of cookies. Her mother gladly took it after thanking her daughter. They sat down at a table near the window and started eating the cookies while Nari told her about her week. She had told her mother about her new neighbor - Jake and her mother always wanted to hear updates about him. She wished that her daughter would end up with Jake and she was pretty loud about it.Nari's mother - Chaewon, was a drug addict. She'd been in rehab for years now. It was hard for her to give up her addiction no matter how hard she had tried. She loved Nari with all of her heart and she felt guilty about leaving her daughter like that. She really tried her best but it's hard, harder than it seems.
------
Nari came back to her apartment after visiting her mother. It was already time for her to take Joy out for a walk. She took Joy out of the apartment and right now she was in front of Jake's. Before she could knock the door, Jake opened the door. They both laughed at the coincidence.
'Should we go?' Jake said, Nari nodded. They went out of the apartment and started walking to the park when Nari stopped.'Have you eaten yet?' Nari asked. 'Nope, why?' Jake said. 'Well, I haven't either and I am very hungry and there's a dog-friendly cafe near. Do you want to go?' 'Let's go then!' Jake said and they turned to the other direction and started walking to the cafe.
While sitting at a table in the dog-friendly cafe, Jake couldn't help but wonder why Nari was so quiet.
'Hey, you okay?' asked Jake snapping Nari out of her thoughts.
'Yeah, it's just...' Nari trailed off and got back into her mind. She was scared to open up about her mother because she didn't want to be judged.Nari's mom was taken away to rehab when Nari was only seventeen. Her life crushed after that event. For a year she was living in a foster house with people constantly bringing up her mother's addiction and how Nari must've been the same. In school most of the students turned their backs on her, only a few close friends still got her back. That friends were the reason why Nari did not give up and got where she is now. We also cannot forget about her therapist. The sweet lady helped Nari to find the thing she loved the most - writing. She was thankful for her past because of that she became stronger but it did not stop her from being scared of being judged.
Although the silence that lingered between the two was just a couple of seconds, for Nari it seemed like an eternity as her mind raced through her memories of her past and the ones with Jake.
Should I trust him?
'I'm fine, I guess.' Nari finally spoke. 'I just don't know how to share what's on my mind cause it's a lot and I'm scared.' Jake looked at her and saw the sadness that fell upon the girl's eyes.
'You don't have to share. I don't really have to know what's happening. I just need to know if you're down so I can cheer you up.' Jake said giving a soft smile and held Nari's hand that was laid on the table, giving it a supportive squeeze. The girl looked up and smiled while her heart skipped a beat. 'Thank you.' She whispered.Joy that was sitting under the table near Nari's feet felt the mood-change and laid down letting his eyes shut. He was happy that his two favorite humans were happy.
