Shadow opened his eyes. He drearily glanced around the room from atop a rusty operating table. One failing fluorescent light tainted the room with a sickly green tone. Getting up made the weapon trip. High-pitched scraping came when his razor-sharp claws of steel collided with the wall in an attempt to stay upright. Stumbling out into the hall revealed nothing useful. Darkness filled the harsh metal corridors alongside an unbearable humidity.

"Shadow,"

The voice was distant and obscure. Did it belong to a girl?

"Shadow?"

That voice was much clearer. It was Sonic. He was afraid. In danger. There was a monster lurking in the darkness. Shadow began running. Metallic clicking accelerated alongside his pace. The hallways were becoming noisy from the sounds of his running. Occasionally, Shadow would stumble and push off of the ground or the walls so he could balance himself. An ear-splitting scrape rang through the halls each time.

"Help!"

He went as fast as he could, but trying to increase his speed only made him trip more. After nearly falling over completely, Shadow caught himself, then instinctually started running on all fours. His speed increased dramatically. Moving like this suited his jagged metal appendages much better. A figure was appearing in the darkness.

Shadow's heart leapt before he sunk his claws into his prey. Blood spattered the walls and drenched his hands. The loud scraping continued relentlessly. The hallways groaned from the echoes that went every which way. It all ended after far too long leaving only the sound of dripping blood. Machinery in the walls came alive as if to celebrate. A harsh metal door opened nearby, providing some light. Shadow looked down at his successful kill.

It was Sonic.

Shadow's tortured screaming rattled his hospital room. Now that he was no longer asleep on the nearby chair, Sonic jumped to the bedside in a panic. He clasped Shadow's left hand with his own and pressed his right onto Shadow's shoulder to calm his writhing. His partner growled through grit teeth. Each subsequent growl came out quieter until the black hedgehog resigned to strained panting. Finally, Shadow opened his eyes. He looked around the room with rapid glances until he was staring into the eyes of his meister.

"You're okay,"

Sonic went from looking worried to laughing incredulously at his weapon's relief.

"Of course, I'm okay. You saved me,"

Was that what happened? Shadow looked up at the ceiling and tried thinking back. He remembered an encounter with a strange meister. Sonic in danger. That blade of black blood. Thinking of the final slash made him aware of the burning pain radiating from his torso.

The door opened, reminding Sonic that he was still holding Shadow's hand. Making matters worse, neither of them had gloves on. He let go and took a half step back with his face burning.

"Is everything alright? I heard shouting?" An echidna with pale orange quills entered the room and looked around cautiously. She wore a white medical coat over a black dress. One look at Shadow and the stranger smiled warmly. "You're awake,"

"Nurse Tikal," Sonic greeted the school's nurse.

The woman nodded and approached Shadow's bed. "I've been looking after you since you got out of surgery. How are you feeling?"

"Sore,"

Tikal touched Shadow's wrist to check his pulse, then looked him over briefly. "I'll let Doctor Starline know you're awake,"

The nurse turned away from the two hedgehogs, smiling darkly as she left the room. She didn't expect to be so happy that Eclipse failed in killing his prey from last night. Having the opportunity to study the effects of black blood further gave her chills. She left the room, but she'd never be too far away.
