It was late night and Jane was in her bed, trying to get some sleep. She was still wide awake and even though she tried counting sheep, it didn't help her fall asleep at all. It was useless. In that moment her phone rang and it startled her. It was almost midnight, who the hell was that! Jane immediately got up, worried that whoever was calling it wasn't for something good in that late hour. Something bad must have happened to someone, Jane thought to herself horrified. Her heart started pounding in horror after she saw that Maura was the one calling her. In that late hour she should be in bed. Unless something had happened to her. Something bad.
"Maura what happened?" Jane picked up the phone with a worried tone, demanding to know what was wrong immediately. She was so worried for her.
"It's not Maura." A strange voice came out from the other end of the line.
"Who is it? And what did you do to Maura?" Jane asked with a threatening tone after hearing the unknown male voice.
"Relax, lady. Maura is fine. Well not really. She is kind of drunk. Not just kind of, she is very bad actually. But don't worry, she's still here in the bar with me and she's safe. I dialed the last number on her phone because she gave it to me. Voluntarily," the man underlined as if Jane would have doubts about it. She just didn't like his blabbering. He was talking too much, but he wasn't saying anything significant.
"You can come and pick her up. I don't think she can go back home all alone in this late hour. We are closing but she doesn't want to leave. And I figured it wouldn't be safe to call her a cab in this late hour. She's so drunk that she probably doesn't even remember her own address. If you're a family member or her relative, you can come and get her. Otherwise you'd better call someone to take her from here."
"Alright. Give me the address of the bar."
After Jane hanged up the phone she quickly dressed the first thing that crossed her path and went out in such a hurry. She drove fast wanting to reach the adress. The faster the better. As she drove her car in the middle of the night she was thinking about Maura. She usually doesn't drink. Something must have happened. But what?
After she reached the address the man gave her, Jane got out of her car and went to the bar to pick up Maura.
When Jane saw that Maura was looking fine, at least not hurt, she calmed down a little bit.
"Jane, what are you doing here?" Maura asked, slurping her words when she saw Jane standing there. And when Jane heard Maura's slurry voice she got a bit mad at her. She was definitely drunk.
"I can ask you the same thing," Jane retorted back sullenly, crossing her arms. She wasn't very pleased to see Maura like that. And plus, it wasn't very pleasant to be still awake in this late hour after some guy called her, and it was all because of Maura.
"I am drinking," Maura pointed out the obvious with a slight giggle at the end, showing her empty glass.
"In the middle of the night!"
"Oh Jane, thank God you're here. This man doesn't want to serve me another drink," she pointed at the bartender, holding her empty glass, pouting at it. "Arrest him!" She pointed at the bartender.
"I told you we are closing, lady," said the bartender in his defense.
"And I think he stole my phone," Maura added sullenly, whining at Jane quietly.
Although Jane was in a really bad mood after seeing Maura drunk like that, she was acting calm and kind to the bartender, she thanked him for calling her and taking care of Maura. He seemed like a decent man. And then the bartender gave her Maura's phone. Jane was ready to go.
"I have your phone, Maura." Jane showed it to Maura, and then she shoved it in her pocket. "Come on now, we are going home." Jane reached out and offered her hand to Maura for balance.
"Noo. I'm not coming with you. I came to drink and I am not going anywhere."
"Maura, don't be ridiculous," Jane said and helped her get up from the chair.
"Nooo. Let go of me!" Maura protested, but Jane dragged her out of the bar against her will. She wasn't in a mood for games.
"Would you just shus? I got up in the middle of the night for you and that's your gratitude?! What were you thinking..." Jane was complaining all the way to her car while she dragged Maura, holding her tight.
"I am not coming with you. Please somebody help. She is trying to kidnap me," Maura yelled although she was walking with Jane without even trying to pull away.
Jane looked around the street, and luckyly there was no one around. She took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. She didn't know what was wrong with Maura and why she was so drunk. Maura didn't have any reason to drink and Jane had never seen her drunk before.
"Just get in the car, Maura!" Jane huffed, and opened the door for her. Her patience was starting to fade away very quickly. "Otherwise I am gonna cuff you," Jane threatened. It was an empty threat of course because she didn't have any handcuffs.
"Oooh, kinky. I might take you offer." Maura said while Jane closed the door, got in the car and drove off. Jane ignored Maura's drunk jibber jabber during the road back. She was too mad at Maura and too agitated to argue with her. Maura had never acted so recless. She looked so drunk.
Jane drove back to her apartment. Maura was staying with her - that was for sure. She couldn't leave her all alone in that state. She unlocked the door and helped Maura get in.
"I can't believe you, Maura!" Jane scolded her after she closed the door behind her. Her voice sounded a bit cold but she couldn't help it - she was a bit mad at Maura. Even furious at her for her stupid behavior. She was a very smart woman, the smartest person Jane knew, and yet for some reason Maura did something so foolish like getting drunk. In the middle of the night. "Look at you! And in what state you managed to get yourself into. How much did you drink? You look so drunk, Maura. I just can't believe it! What were you thinking?"
Maura gigled. "I am perfect, Jane" Maura stated confidently, being so smug about it. "You see," she raised her leg as if to show Jane that she could manage standing on one leg, but she quickly stumbled and Jane caught her.
"I only had a drink... or two... because you came and killed the buzz. Buzkilker. I needed a few more drinks."
"Just a drink?" Jane asked. "More likely a whole bottle," Jane retorted.
"Well... just a few... but I needed some courage so I drank more," Maura said. "But that's just to get brave."
"Brave?" Jane couldn't understand what she meant. "You drank alcohol so you could be brave? Are you scared of something, Maura?"
"Yeah," Maura nodded her head in agreement, looking at Jane.
"What are you scared of?" Jane asked, concerned about Maura's state. And about her fears. She couldn't even imagine what could scare Maura so much that it made her drink alcohol.
"Of you." Maura said it like she was blaming her for something, but Jane didn't know what it was.
"Of me?" Jane asked, utterly surprised by Maura's answer. "But I haven't done anything to scare you, Maura."
"Relax, Jane," Maura waved her hand dismissively. "It's not your fault. I had a couple of drinks for courage. I wanted to get brave."
"Brave for what?" Jane asked again, feeling lost at Maura's drunk confession. She obviously wanted to say something, but Jane couldn't understand her.
"Brave enough to do this..." Maura said and all of a sudden she grabbed Jane by the neck and kissed her.
