Chapter 5

Assalamu alaikum awesome readers! Here is Chapter 5 that focuses on the 4th verse or ayah of Chapter 12 of the Qur’an.  Warning: there are over 5000 words in this chapter.  In the effort of interpreting the meaning of this verse, NAK takes his time to explain the meanings behind the words.  In the process, he accomplishes a dual purpose: translating the meaning of the verses, while also providing vitally important lessons for parents to use while raising their children.

I tried reducing the content of his audio message, but truly I could not do it without taking out part of his message.

In my humble opinion, there can be no better time for humanity to learn the lessons of parenthood from Jacob, the father of Joseph, that now.  Last week in the United States in a Muslim community, two young men who attended university, made a plot to kill their parents, their sister, their grandmother and finally, themselves.  Unfortunately, they were successful with carrying out their plans.  In their suicide note left behind on Instagram, they mentioned many times how they had been depressed since Middle School.  Many neighbors who were interviewed said that they are in shock and could not believe that it happened.  This is not surprising as they did not live inside the house.  But one must ask the critical question as a parents, a grandparent or any other relation, how did the lack of communication reach the level in that family where this outcome was deemed to be the only solution to their problem?  There are no easy answers here and I mention it not to vilify the family.  But rather to say that Nouman Ali Khan’s long explanation of the meaning of verse 4, might provide vital answers for all of us to use in raising or correcting our actions in raising children.

Okay, let’s get started!

Verse 4 of Chapter 12 in the Qur’an: English Sahih International

“(Of these stories mention) when Joseph said to his father, “O my father, indeed I have seen (in a dream) eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.”

Tafsir or Interpretation of the Arabic by Ibn Kathir:

Yusuf’s Dream

“Allah says,

(Remember) when Yusuf (Joseph) said to his father: “O my father! Verily, I saw (in a dream) eleven stars and the sun and the moon – I saw them prostrating themselves to me.”

Allah says, ‘Mention to your people, O Muhammad, among the stories that you narrate to them, the story of Yusuf.’

Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) mentioned his dream to his father, Prophet Yaqub (Jacob), son of Prophet Ishaq (Isaac), son of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon them all.
