Isabella Summers

Isabella POV

I tapped my fingers impatiently against the steering wheel, biting my lower lip as I watched raindrops race each other down the windshield. It was 8:30 in the morning, and I was officially late for my first day of senior year. Fantastic. Letting out a frustrated sigh, I kept drumming my fingers, glaring at the unmoving line of cars ahead of me. Damn traffic jams.

Flipping down the sun visor, I opened the little mirror tucked inside. My reflection stared back at me: messy brown hair, tired honey-colored eyes, and lips that could use some life. I scraped my hair into a half-hearted bun and swiped on a coat of lip gloss. At least I looked a little less like I'd just rolled out of bed—because I had. Oversized hoodie, grey sweatpants, puffy eyes... I was killing it this morning. Staying up late to finish that book last night was clearly a stellar decision.

A loud honk jolted me out of my self-pity. I glanced up to see the car ahead pulling forward and slammed my foot onto the gas. By the time I pulled into the parking lot at Redville High, it was 8:40. Only ten minutes late. Not bad, considering I'd been pushing my luck the entire drive.

I practically sprinted into the building, my fingers fumbling with my phone as I tried to pull up my schedule online. My focus was locked on the screen when I suddenly collided with someone—a hard, solid someone. The impact sent me stumbling backward, bracing for the unforgiving floor.

Instead, a strong hand caught my waist, pulling me into a firm, warm chest. My eyes flew open, and I found myself face-to-face with piercingly light blue—no, almost grey—eyes. His gaze was sharp and unyielding, framed by a jawline so perfect it felt sculpted. Tattoos snaked up his arms and neck, peeking out from beneath his shirt. Intimidating didn't even begin to describe him, but holy hell, he was gorgeous.

"Watch where you're going next time, princess," he murmured, his voice low and gravelly. The heat of his words brushed against my ear, sending a shiver down my spine.

I blinked, snapping out of my daze. Flustered, I pushed myself away from him. "I—I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to... uh... thanks? Yeah, uh, see you around!"

The words tumbled out of my mouth in a rush as I turned on my heel and practically sprinted down the hallway. See you around?! What was that? I didn't even know him! My cheeks burned as I hurried to put as much distance as possible between us. With any luck, I'd never see him again.
