Matais had been bored the entire time Yondu had been on this job. He was expected to stay where he was which he found unfair as Peter scored himself his own job away from this boring planet. He was left alone in the waiting hall of the meeting place, Kraglin and Yondu had just gone into the meeting area and judging by the fidgety person offering the job, he was willing to bet it would take a while to get done. With that logic in mind, he figured it surely wouldn't hurt if he slipped away for a moment or so. He got up and snuck out of the waiting area, staying out longer than anticipated so by the time the meeting was over, Yondu/Kraglin realized Matais was nowhere to be seen.
