"So!" said Dumbledore, with a huge smile. "Now that we are all fed and watered, I must once more ask for your attention, while I give out a few notices. "
Ron and Harry both groaned. "What?" I asked them.
Harry pointed to someone at the back of the Hall. It was a short man, holding a cat. He reminded me of Draco Malfoy, because of his facial expression. "That's Filch with his cat, Mrs. Norris." Harry whispered. "Caretaker. Really grumpy, can't do magic. Every year he asks Dumbledore to announce a list of forbidden items."
I snorted. Mrs. Norris. Who would name a cat Mrs. Norris?
"Mr. Filch, the caretaker, has asked me to tell you that the list of objects forbidden inside the castle has this year been extended to include Screaming Yo-yos, Fanged Frisbees, and Ever-Bashing Boomerangs. The full list comprises some four hundred and thirty-seven items, I believe, and can be viewed in Mr. Filch's office, if anybody would like to check it."
Ron rolled his eyes. "No one cares." He grumbled.
"As ever," Dumbledore contuined with a slight grin. " I would like to remind you all that the forest on the grounds is out-of-bounds to students, as is the village of Hogsmeade to all below third year. "
"Do you have a permission form?" Hermione asked me.
I nodded. My mom had sent it in by mail a fews days back.
"It is also my painful duty to inform you that the Inter-House Quidditch Cup will not take place this year."
I heard Harry gasp. The Weasley twins, Fred and George were staring at Dumbledore with their mouths open, appearently too shocked to speak. It seemed like this had an effect on everyone. Half the Hall gaped at Dumbledore, while the other half looked at each other in confusion.
I sighed, this was one of this things I had been looking foward to at Hogwarts. Quidditch. My mom played Keeper when she was at Hogwarts. She had taught me how to fly.
"This is due to an event that will be starting in October, and continuing throughout the school year, taking up much of the teachers' time and energy - but I am sure you will all enjoy it immensely. I have great pleasure in announcing that this year at Hogwarts -"
Just then, the doors of the Great Hall flew open. A man with lowered his hood as he walked back to the teachers table. I gasped. He was ugly, there was no other way to put it. His face was covered with scars, and half his nose was missing. But worst of all, his eyes. One of them was an normal eye, but the other was huge, and it was held to his head by a headband with a special socket. That eye rolled around in it's socket. The eletrical blue darted all around the hall, while the other was purely focused on Dumbledore.I swear it looked at me for a split second. I shrank back againest my seat.
"Who...who is that?" I whispered to Hermione. She didn't answer. Hermione still had a look of horror on her face, as did everyone else in the hall.
When he reached the teachers' platform, he shook Dumbledore's hand and then took the seat next to Dumbledore's. I hadn't realized it was empty.
"May I introduce our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher?" said Dumbledore brightly into the silence. "Professor Moody."
No one clapped.
Harry gaped. "The one your dad went to help this morning?" He asked Ron.
Ron shrugged. "Must be. But what happened to his face?"
"I...I don't know." Hermione whispered back. Her gaze was still fixed on Moody, or rather Professor Moody as I should say. This guy was the last person I wanted as a teacher.
