Day One
Riah on the sideMama is shaking me awake the next morning. I grumble and roll over, forcing my eyes open. She’s scolding me about something, but I’m not sure what.
“---And to think your match will be here the afternoon!” she finishes.
I groan, last night’s nightmare crashing back to me, but this isn’t a dream, it’s real life, “Can’t we reschedule. I don’t feel good.”
Mama grabs my arm and pulls me into a sitting position, “NO! It’s your first day of courtship with him and then tomorrow you have to head to the academy. We might not get to me him until you guys are married if we don’t do this today.”
I groan again as she pulls me from bed and force me to shower. I stand under the water, letting it refresh me and wash the bad memory of last night away.
Riah grabs my hand after the banquet is over and leads me behind the building.
“Let me go!” I protest, slapping at his hand the entire way there. He grabs me and slams me against the side of the building. We lock eyes and I glare at him. His body is pressed close to mine, his one leg between my two.
“Apologize,” he quietly demands, “I don’t want to have to ask twice.”
“Sorry,” I spit at him, only because he has both my arms pinned above my head and for me to move it would require too much effort.
Something comes over those green eyes of his, the color of limes or grass. He’s staring at me so hard, I feel like he’s looking right into my soul.
Finally, he stops, “If you pull some disrespectful shit like that when we’re married, there will be hell to pay.”I shiver at the memory and finish in the shower. Back in my room I pick up the envelope that contains the basic facts about our match.

I’m happy he likes pizza, seeing that as part of our first date, I must cook him his favorite meal. I put on a skirt, and the only red blouse I happen to own and a red skirt with a black design. My mother helps me prepare lunch, which I almost burn. By one o’ clock, there’s a knock on the door. Papa opens it and Riah strolls in to the kitchen, carrying a bouquet of blue roses.
“For you,” he offers them. He doesn’t seem nervous, like a lot of guys are when first meeting their first formal meeting of each other. He shakes hands with Papa and nods to Mom before sitting down at the counter.
“Son, wouldn’t you like to go talk while the women be women?” Papa asks. Riah shakes his head, “If it’s all the same to you, I’d like to spend time with my wife to be.”
Papa shrugs and I look to Mama, hoping she won’t really leave me in here with this boy, but she follows Papa without even a glance in my direction. I feel Riah’s hand on my arm as I watch them leave and jump at the sensation.
