I fade in and out of class, only half listening to Jaycob's lecture, which I usually love. As soon as school is out I walk home, on cruise control.
I go through my closet, looking for something to wear. I don't want to look even remotely sexy, however I don't want it to be extremely obvious I wanted to look like trash. I go with jeans and a collared shirt, then head downstairs to wait for Jericho.
He arrives with flowers in head and a goofy smile on his face, "You look good."
"Really?" I think, "Thanks."
He hands me the flowers and I put them down by the door, "Ready to go?"
I let him take my hand and we slide into a cab. Jericho goes on and on in my ear about... Hell I'm not listening.
"Sage," I snap my head in the direction of his voice, "I'm really happy that you agreed to go out with me."
I don't respond. The numb begins to sick back into my bones and nerves, chilling me to the core.
"Can I kiss you?" Jericho slides closer to me and I hold still as his lips are placed on mine. I wait for the warmth of his body to rub off on me and warm me again, but only the cold. I might as well be ice making out with fire. He pulls away smiling and I force one back.
We reach our destination, an up-scale Italian restaurant with a name I can't pronounce and a menu I can't read. Jericho orders for both of us and having run out of words to say, he places a hand over mine.
"Sage, sweetie? Why aren't you saying anything?"
I take a sip of water, "I'm sorry I've just got a lot on my mind right now."
Before I can keep it in, I tell Jericho the entire conflict, how I'm suppose to be with Riah, but I'm suppose to be with him, that the Elect himself is pressuring me to choose.
"That isn't fair," he starts, "But if you think you're suppose to be with me, why aren't you? Why are you fighting me?"
I don't say anything else after that. We end up back at his house and I let him in, let his skin connect to mine, doing things I'd thought was reserved for mommies and daddies. We don't even make it to the bed.
After we finish, Jericho pulls a blanket over us, holding me close.
"I love you," he whispers.
"Don't," I turn to him, "Don't say that to me."
"It's true," Jericho strokes my face, "I really do love you."
I start to shake, and then tears start to leak from my eyes. He pulls me closer, letting me cry against his bare chest.
***
I wake up, butt ass naked, my body burning from fucking my best friend on a shag carpet. I grab my clothes and do the walk of shame, feeling particularly dead inside.
A/N: Sorry this chapter is so short the next one will be longer. I think I know where I want the rest of the book to go, so expect the book to pick back up.
