After lighting up a fire and cooking my food, I sit and enjoy it for lunch. Just after I put out my fire however, I heard leaves rustling behind the trees. Quickly, with a shaky voice, I call out the beginning of the safe sentence, only know by my allies.
"Today we st-stand strong?"
A voice calls out in response.
"For none of us will fall"
A loud sigh escapes my mouth. It's someone allied to my side.
"Hello?" I call.
"Ayo you got some food?" I instantly recognize my friends voice. It's Alex, someone who I thought was long gone.
"I caught some fish earlier, but it's gone now, why?"
Their voice is raspy in response.
"I'm hungry, that's all." ni
"Oh ok" I respond. "Do you wanna go find some berries?"
Their tone changes from monotone to exited.
"Really?! I'd love to."
"Alright, but before we go, take some water. Your voice is raspy as hell." I hand Alex my water bottle.
After they take a drink, we started to walk to a area that I knew was ripe with blueberries and blackberries.
As we walked, we began to have a conversation about the last few weeks.
"Where have you been?" I asked.
They reply, "I've been lost down south. I was being chased so I tried to get away."
"By whom?" I tensed my muscles. For the last weeks I've thought I was safe. Maybe I was being tracked.
"I'm not really sure." They respond. "It looked like government officials.
"Oh god really?!"
"That's the only logical explanation." They say with a heavy sigh.
Our government was corrupt. An evil dictator had murdered our leader and her family in cold blood to achieve his goals of domination. He instantly sent out government officials around our land to hunt down the fae community.  it was terrifying. thank god Alex was still alive. They are they only person I know of that are alive.
"hey Alex?" I snap out of my thoughts and return to the conversation.
"yea?"
my voice quavering, I realized something
"So you know how He mu- murdered the queen right? I just remembered that they didn't find all of the bodies. Th- they only found 5/6 royals. the eldest child was missing.
Alex looked shocked, then confused.
"are you sure? i'm pretty sure they found the body last week. There was a radio coverage about it."
"Oh. I must have been out of range then. That makes me feel better."
I was relived. Not that the family was dead, but that there was no traumatized child hiding somewhere.
After we finished gathering and washing the berries, alex seemed to rush off. for a minute, it was strange, but I quickly forgot about it when dusk swallowed the blue sky, turning it gray. I returned to my camp, setting my sleeping bag up in a tree for extra precautions. While I was walking, I notice a small gold glare illuminated in the moons glow. In a light transe, I walked over to the gold object and I picked it up, fingering it between my fingers. It was a coin, flat on one side and engraved with the royal shield of arms on the other. Small writing circled the edge of the coin.
"don't fail us Alex."
