The Hogwarts Express was crowded with students, but despite how many people there were Eris sat idly in her own compartment. Now that it seemed like her and Cecelia's friendship was over, the tangerine girl took time to reflect.

The day the two girls met was exactly seven years ago now, on this same train. Cecelia has always been confident and introduced herself.

"Hi, I'm Cecelia, do you want to be friends?"

"I'm Eris, and seeing as I'm alone all the time, sure."

Cecelia was the one who started the friendship. A friendship that lasted several years, and now it was like a distant memory, a lie. Eris' chest felt like it was sinking into her stomach, she got attached, why did she do that? She always gets attached and it always leads to Eris getting hurt.

When Eris was six years old, her sister, Athena, left their house. That hurt like hell. Athena left on bad terms with their parents, it led to her being half way disowned. Eris was too young to understand what was happening between her and her sister. She felt abandoned; it hurt when she saw families that were so close, siblings who could talk about anything and everything, parents who didn't neglect their children as they broke down. Eris wanted that more than anything, she wanted someone to cling onto, but soon came to the conclusion that she was alone.

Cecelia gave her some hope; Eris thought that since there was enough history there, they could always be there for each other. Just another lie. Eris' soul was wrapped in ice, and that layer just kept getting thicker and thicker, as if she was losing more and more feeling.

"Can you feel all the wrackspurts in this compartment?" an airy voice randomly asked.

"Holy fuck- uh sorry, what?" Eris replied to the bleach blonde girl sitting before her.

"The wrackspurts. They like to travel into your ears and cause confusion."

 "Who are you?"

"Luna Lovegood, and no need to introduce yourself, I know you're Eris Malacoda."

This chick was weird. Like really fucking weird. But Eris couldn't say she didn't like Luna. Cecelia seemed to care too much about how people perceived her, but here was this Luna Lovegood, a mix of bubbly pink and lavender purple, who didn't seem to give a fuck what people thought of her. Eris needed more friends like that. Hell, Eris needed more friends in general, because currently she was at zero.

"You keep doing that," Luna says, curiosity filling her eyes.

"What?"

"Zoning off into your own world."

Eris didn't know how to respond. She knew it was true, but also what do you say to that? "Yeah I know, I just don't like talking to people because they all hurt you in the end." Luna would probably just call her a cynic and leave.

 "What are you thinking about?"

 "You're mom topless, I don't fucking know."

"My mother's dead,"

"Oh."

Eris assumed she was meant to say "I'm sorry for your loss" or something sending her regards to Luna, but who knows? Maybe her death was a good thing for the family, like maybe her mother was abusive, and Luna needed to solve that problem, so death. And so Eris thought she should get an answer directly from Luna to know what to say.

"Are you happy she's dead?"

"She died from a spell while experimenting when I was nine."

"Oh, that sucks; I'm sorry for your loss."

The two girls sat in silence. Eris couldn't decipher whether it was awkward or not; she enjoyed Luna's company, but didn't know what else to say. To get out of this situation, Eris got up from her seat to go change into her uniform.

When Eris got back to the compartment, the train started to pull into a halt, and the girl knew that soon, she'd be in the Great Hall, hopefully commiserating with someone about the world's problems. Oh, how the opposite would happen; in fact, how her whole year would be the opposite of what Eris Malacoda expected.
