Chapter 3: An Unknown Place

I'm moving. Up. I force myself to open my eyes.

I am in an elevator of some sort. An old elevator at that. And it's moving. But- where? I remember being pushed into my bed, my body feeling like it was being pushed into the center of the earth. But then- bam. I'm in this box. It must be a dream. But when I try to pinch myself, I won't wake up. The necklace around my neck is gone. It simply vanished. Necklace.

What about a necklace?

Wait- what necklace?

I don't remember a necklace.

I don't even remember why I'm here.

How I'm here.

One bigger question comes to mind. Who even am I?

I look around. I'm in a dark box. Okay, dark box. Think, think, think. Ugh. I can't seem to remember anything. At all. All of the sudden the box comes to a stop. Am I stuck in here? The top opens, opening up to a bunch of figures. I cover my eyes to keep the bright sunlight out. I heard talking.. Someone jumped down here. All of the sudden it hit me like a blow to the stomach. I am going to throw up. I can tell. I open my eyes and run to the other side of the box, shoving past a kid.. Teen? There's no time to look. And I throw up into one of the barrels. I hear someone shouting behind me, but I'm a little preoccupied. Everything comes up. I don't remember eating, but I sure am regretting it. After about ten minutes, I turn around to look at a bunch of faces. One guy is in the box. His eyebrows are a little... weird. There must be about 50 other kids outside of this thing. Was it a box in the ground? I try climbing out, but my stomach feels like literal heck

. Why am I so nauseous?

As I try to climb out (and fail might I add),the boy comes behind me.

"Oh the girl can't even pull herself out." I shrug it off and keep trying. I can feel everybody's eyes on me. After another few minutes, I manage to pull myself out of the box. I wipe off my hands and turn around.

"Quite the turnout isn't it. While everybody is busy staring at me for some reason, mind telling me where I am?" I look at the boy in the front. The boy from the box. He must be in charge or something.

"Greenie, Welcome to the Glade." The glade?

"Mind going into detail?" I say with a roll of my eyes. "I can't remember a thing, except for spending the last ten minutes vomiting in a box that is stuck in the ground."

"Woah there, girls' got an attitude. Don't worry, Alby will explain everything.Get you workin' as a slopper in no time. Gally. But to you, that's Captain Gally."

"Yeah, I may have lost my memory, but I am not that stupid." I turned around and started to walk away when I ran into a boy. "Sorry," I look up. He has blonde hair and he's a little taller than I am. I walk past him and out into the grass. I see four walls surrounding this place. The Glade is what that boy called it. I'm not sure where I am going but I see an exit on the closest wall. I start walking towards it.

All I want is my memories back, and to escape wherever the heck

I am now. And some food. That would be nice. Huh. Nobody's even trying to walk out. They can't actually like it here can they? No. That's impossible. I know i've only been here like twenty minutes, and I can't remember a thing.. But surely I didn't.. Live here? No.

I keep walking to the door. Entrance? Whatever. Walls. There. I look back only to see a few people. There are a few people on the very edge gardening. It's like they have a whole civilization. I continue walking. Wow, this place is pretty large. I come to the edge of the.. Glade and look out into the darkness. Creepy.. Let's go. I start walking out when I hear footsteps and some boy calling someone named.. Greenie? Welp, I don't know them so they will have to find them on their own. I walk out past the walls into the tunnel, corridor, whatever this is and keep walking. After about five minutes a hand grabs my wrist. I turn around ready to fight when I realize it's the boy from earlier.

"Greenie, you dumby.. Are you trying to die? Cause that's exactly what's going to happen if you continue into the maze."

The maze.. That's what it is!! That means.. All I've gotta do is find the way out and then I'm free.

"I'd rather die than be stuck in whatever type of place that is. Besides, I can find a way out.. Then get my memories, actually remember my name, and be free."

"I'm afraid it's more complicated than that. Believe me, I know how you feel. We have all been through that feeling on our first day. But don't go waiting for your memories to just jump back into your head. They won't. You would think after 2 years you would actually begin to remember a few things from before this.. Place. But, you don't. Therefore you're stuck with it. Come on, follow me. If we don't get back before the walls close, we are dead meat." We start to walk back. This boy seems nice.. A little different from the other one.. Gally. I'd rather not die anyways. We walk back into the Glade right before I feel a heavy movement underneath my feet. I turn around to see the walls- doors? Closing and sealing the exit.

Am I trapped? No. There's no way. He wouldn't do that right?

As if he read my mind, he looked at me.

"Don't worry. It's to keep us safe. They will open back up in the morning."

As he says that I realize how dark it is getting. I wonder how long I've been here. Can't be more than a few hours, though it feels like it's been years. I turn around facing the boy.

"Newt.. that's your name isn't it? Can you tell me what is so bad out there? Why do the walls close? And why can't I remember anything?"

"You will remember your name soon enough. Usually takes a few days. Until then, I'll call you greenie, as will the rest of the gladers. As for what's so bad out there.. Everything will be explained tomorrow when you meet Alby. If you want, I can take you to eat dinner and then show you where to sleep."

"Yeah sounds good. Umm.. let me go do one thing really quick. I'll be over.. Where do I go again?" Newt showed me where I could go to get food.

"Okay I'll be there in a few." And with that I set off in the direction of the woods that I walked past earlier. I need to know why that area is so secluded. Maybe I would just spend a little time walking around, exploring. After all, it's not like anyone will even know I'm missing. Right?
