Eva's POV:
I love the part in the book where the detective gathers all of the suspects into a room together and states the reason as to why or why not they are the killer. It is personally my favourite part of the book. Evidentially this is that part of the book because I am in the police station sitting next to all of the other suspects. They haven’t called any of us in yet, but it’s only a matter of time. I’m sitting in between Erin’s ex-boyfriend and her landlady. It isn’t very pleasant as we aren’t all that fond of each other.
An average height angry looking man marches over to us and stares at all of us before saying, “Eva Stone?” he sounds like a heavy smoker.
I stand up, “Yes?” I ask. He smells like a heavy smoker too.
“Come with me.” He grumbles, turns on his feet and walks towards a door.
I can feel the other suspects eyes burrowing into the back of my head as I follow him into the room. There are two officers already in the room, one female and one male. The smoker closes the door on me leaving me in here with the other officers.
Once I’m inside I know exactly where I am. There’s a mirror on the wall to my right and a table and one free chair directly in front of me. I’m going to be interrogated, although I did figure that when I first arrived here.
“Please, take a seat.” The woman says kindly, “I’m Officer Miller and this is my partner Officer Tucker.”
I obediently do as she said and take a seat.
I’m completely ready for anything they are prepared to throw at me, good cop bad cop routine and maximization. But they aren’t going to get anything but what I want them to know and all that is is the fact that I’m innocent.
“So, we understand that you and Erin were very close.” Officer Miller states.
“Yes, we were close.” I reply blankly. Clearly my answer wasn’t what she was looking for so she nudges her partner.
“We also know that Erin’s body was found in your office. Care to explain?” Officer Tucker asks, raising his eyebrows.
“To be honest I didn’t have a clue that she was there. I was shocked, I even cried and that’s a rarity for me.” I say honestly.
“Is there any reason as to why you would want to kill Erin Heart?” he grinds me but I won’t be worn down that easily.
“Certainly not. She was my best friend. I couldn’t imagine a day without her…I still can’t.” I got a little carried away in the last answer but it’s true she was like a sister to me.
“And where were you at around eleven-thirty last night?” Officer Miller inquires leaning backwards on her chair.
“At eleven-thirty?” I think to myself out loud, “I would have been in bed reading my book.”
“Is there someone that can clarify this information?” she asks while Officer Tucker stares at me intently.
“I don’t believe so.” As soon as I say this I know that I am left with now alibi. “You could check the apartments lobby security cameras. Wait. There was a blackout.” I’m a prime suspect now.
Officer Tucker and Miller give each other a knowing look and then turn back to me.
“Thank you, Miss Stone. We will be keeping in touch.”
I nod then stand and walk to the door. Erin was found, dead, in my office and I have no alibi. I know that if I were a detective I would highly doubt my story, too. I have to go home and try to somehow prove my innocence and find out who murdered my best friend!
******
I dump my bag and shoes at the front door and pull my hair off of my face. Alright, I think, at the crime scene I remember that Erin had a bruise on her face meaning that she was probably beaten and I'm guessing that from the cuts on her fists it appears that she wasn’t the only one that was being beaten, she must’ve been putting up a fight. Who could have done this to her?!
Now, out of all of the suspects that were at the police station there was Erin’s ex- boyfriend, her landlady and her friend that I’ve met once or twice. I don’t think I saw any cuts or bruises on any of them. Unless it has been concealed by makeup or clothing. Now, who, out of these people would have the motive to kill Erin? Well, I know that after over two years with Aiden, her ex, they had a huge fight and she dumped him. The breakup wasn’t that long ago so maybe he was still angry about it and decided to kill her. I don’t see how the landlady fits into all of this but I can’t rule anyone out. And Stephanie, Erin’s other friend, it seemed like they were fine, although they didn’t hang out a lot. But is not hanging out often, enough to make you a killer? I wouldn’t think so. There must be something else going on. I grab a spare notebook and pen and lie on the couch. I should take all this down, I tell myself, it’s a good idea that I keep track of my findings. Tomorrow I will go and catch up with all of these people to discuss what was going on. I also need a better alibi, and if it means lying then so be it.
I walk over to the mantle on my fireplace and pick up a picture of Erin and I as teenagers. We are both beaming brightly at sunshine beach; we went there once for the holidays. I remember us when we were children, she was the more fun one and I was the rational and responsible one.” You can have fun for both of us.” I remember saying to her once when she wanted me to go to a school party.
I miss her so much.
I place the picture back on the mantle and let my hair fall down in front of my face. Then I go to bed.
