Luke's POV

"What's up, mate?"

I grunted, not wanting to speak, and kept on stuffing smelly socks into my backpack.

“Hey?” Jordan was not one to give up.

“I’m traveling, Jordan,” I replied, exasperated. This boy was enough to drive somebody totally nuts.

“Where?” he looked surprised. Not very unpredictable. His world probably was restricted to the home. “London,” I replied shortly.

“Wow. London. But why?”

“I want to, that’s why.”

He frowned. “You all right?” he asked.

I nodded. “I’m fine.”

“Okay then, why are you going?” he repeated.

“I told you, man,” I snapped, looking up at him.

“The actual reason, buddy.” Wow, he was not usually this observant.

I sighed. “I am going to find my family, okay?”

He remained silent and I continued packing my bag. I was going to take only my old backpack, so it was kind of hard to put all my belongings into it, so I decided to take only the essentials. I chose a couple of shirts and a basic slack. They will have to do. I also put in my necessities and my toolkit. I can never live without it.

Just as I zipped the worn-out bag, I pulled out the old photograph from my back pocket and put it on my dresser, protected by a heavy paper-weight. In the morning, it would go back to my pocket.

I looked up to see Jordan staring intently at me. “What’s it?” I asked, irritated.

“Do you mind me coming along?” he asked furtively.

I immediately shook my head. “No, no, that is impossible. This is my personal problem. I cannot take you.”

“Please, Luke,” he pleaded.

“Jordan, I said no,” I declared in a firm voice and switched off the light. “Now you better get some sleep, J.”

I lay in my single bed, trying to let myself be overcome by sleep, but I realized I couldn’t. Not now, when I was about to go out into the real world on my own, for the first time. Instead, I found myself going over my plan again. I would take the train to London, and then browse the city to find my sister. If luck was with me, my search would end there, otherwise, I know not how bad it can be. Of course, it was not going to be easy to find my sister in a big city like London. I didn’t even have an address to help me out. The only thing that I knew was that my sister was alive, and my family too. It was going to be exciting to finally leave Aberdeen. I had heard the tube service pf London was one of the best in the world. The fantasy of London slowly faded away as my eyelids became heavy and sleep finally consumed me.

The next time I opened my eyes, it was barely dawn. Jordan was fidgeting in his bed. I turned to my other side and my clock told me it was half past four in the morning.

“Whazzit, Joddan?” I asked in a slurred voice, when the noise did not cease from Jordan’s bed.

“I am not feeling sleepy, Luke,” came the reply.
