Bright lights. There are bright lights shining in my face. Its so bright. I close my eyes and lay back down in my bed. Bed? Wait... I don't remember being in a bed. No, I wasn't in a bed earlier. I was... I don't know. I try to remember but I can't. I sit up and open my eyes. I'm in a small room, on a bed. In front of me there are four people. A woman with blonde hair which is in a ponytail. She has blue eyes, and is wearing a denim top and white shorts. Next to her, there's a woman with red hair, brown eyes, an orange shirt that says "Heathers", and jeans. There is one with brown hair, holding a clipboard. She has a name tag that says "Dr. Levinson." And then there's a girl. She looks younger than the rest. Maybe a teenager? She has long brown hair that goes down to her waist, with purple streaks. She's wearing a tee-shirt" and jean shorts. I don't recognize any of them. Where am I? Who are they? What is going on?!" I shout. "Where am I?! Who are you?!"
The woman with the brown hair steps forward. "I'm Dr. Levinson." She turns to the girl in the tee-shirt that says "Heathers". "This is Reyna Keenan Wynn. She volunteers here." Reyna waves. "This is Elle McLemore." She points to the woman with the "Bring It On" shirt. "And this is Taylor Louderman."
"What on earth is happening?" I ask. "Why am I here?"
"We found you in an alley." Taylor explains. "You were unconscious and looked really sick, so we brought you to the hospital."
"Alley?!" I exclaim. "What alley?! I wasn't in an alley. Why are you saying I was in an alley?"Dr. Levinson whispers something to Taylor, Jessica and Reyna. She walks up to me slowly. "I'm gonna ask you a few questions, okay?"
"Okay..." I say, a bit nervously.
"Let's start off easy. What's your name?"
At that moment, I realize something terrifying. I don't know my name! I don't even know my own name.
"I- I don't know." I reply, holding back tears.
"Hey, its okay." She says, handing me a tissue. "Can you read this?" She points to a paper bracelet on my arm. My hospital bracelet.
"C-Chloe Hayes." I read.
She writes something down and looks back up at me. "What's 3 x 2?" She asks.
"Six" I answer. At least I know that.
"How old are you?" She questions. I just stare back at her, until she tells me the answer.
"You are eleven years old." She tells me. She looks at my file. "Born on November 2nd, 2007."
She asks me some more stuff about my childhood, which I can't answer, and then some less personal questions which I can. Finally, she finishes and calls Taylor, Jessica, and Reyna over.
"My official diagnosis is that Chloe has Dissociative Amnesia." Dr Levinson says.
"What's that?" I ask. "Am I going to die?"
Reyna stepped forward. "No, Chloe. Dissociative Amnesia means that something scary happened to you." She explains gently. "Your brain didn't want to remember the scary thing, so it made it go away."
"But why can't I remember my name?" I wonder, confused. "Am I scary?"
"No no no." Reyna says, shaking her head and laughing. "You, my friend, are adorable. My guess is something bad happened at home, and it happened a lot, so your brain took away your memories of your home and family, which included all your personal stuff."
"Oh, okay." I reply.
Taylor looks at Jessica incredulously. "When did she learn this?" She asks.
"I want to go to med school when I graduate." Reyna explains.
Taylor high fives her. "Nice!"
Reyna comes over and asks "Are you ready to go?"
I don't wanna go back to the bad place. "Are you gonna send me back to the scary place?" I inquire.
"No." She tells me. "We're going to a place called the St James theatre. Everyone there is really nice."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
