The intense light of morning illuminates your face, shocking you out of your pitiful train of thought.

No. There's no point in that.

You switch the news off and pour water into your kettle. This will calm your nerves. There's no point in learning about bad things you can't control, right? You should be able to relax during the weekend.

The birds outside sing a pleasant song, and you allow yourself to breathe in the nostalgic smell of spring honeysuckle. Living in the moment does wonders in improving your mood, and you hum a little tune. Miraculously, your doorbell rings at the same time as your last note. You let out a chuckle at that. That's right: your package! It's set to come today. Lovely.

You happily swing open the door, exclaiming, "Good morning! I'll take tha-"

Gru.

It's Gru. Why-

You begin to close the door.

"Y/N..."

The door clamps shut. You feel frozen. Why is he looking at you like that? Him of all people? You take a moment to ponder and then crack it open.

"Why are you here?"

He releases a long, shaky sigh. Bewildered, you open the door further.

Gru trails his fingers along his forehead, already slick with sweat. He drops his arms and clenches his fists.

"Y/N, I know it's been a while, but... I have to... apologize."

He looks at you, nudging for any type of response, but all you can do is stare in shock.

"For, um, what I've done... In the past... Or, more accurately, what I failed to do... to provide."

You remain silent, and he seems to take this as a prod to leave, flushing and stepping back.

No.

You grab his hand before you realize what you're doing, and you continue to stare in silent shock. Your brain has gone numb. There is nothing to say.

Somehow, he blushes harder. You yank your hand away. Flustered, you both make eye contact with your mouths agape. You shut your eyes and prepare to right yourself, feeling a twinge of anger.

"You.. Stupid! Why have you come here? Why? And with all of this theatrical nonsense!" You let go of his hand and cross your arms. "Why apologize after all this time? What exactly do you want from me? You despicable man!"

Gru looks to the sky with watery eyes, surprising you. He was never an emotional person.

"You know, there are some things in life that permanently change a man. Before, I wanted nothing less than the moon, but now my aspirations in life are much... smaller."

Seeming to gain some confidence, he looks at you with a determined expression.

"But, they're bigger, too. My gorls... As far as I'm concerned, they're bigger and brighter than the moon. I never had anything like that growing up, so I just want to make sure..."

He swallows.

"That the world isn't despicable for them. I don't know what I'm doing anymore, y/n; I've lost all interest in the art of evil..."

He straightens his hand and stares at it. It's sweaty.

"I know you want nothing more to do with me, and I have no qualms about that. We're not in each other's lives any more, but it just felt wrong not to apologize to you. You were always so good to me, and I never repaid that. So, I guess, what I'm trying to say is... I'm sorry."

Before you can respond, he hands you a box of fancy chocolates and turns.

Askance, he says, "Goodbye... And, thank you for hearing me out."

At the sight of his shrinking silhouette, your stomach drops. Who is this? The Gru you knew was callous, stoic; as much as you loved him, you both knew it was an unreciprocated feeling. He loved his work, not you. Now, he's poured his heart out to you. And, now he's leaving.

"Oh, Gru..."

You run out the door with your arm stretched out, struggling to keep up with his long legs. He's so close.

"Gr - uagh!"

A rock is in the way, and your foot has made contact with it. Barreling through the air, you barely see Gru swivel his head and sprint. You're in his arms, red, panting. Your cheeks feel wet. Shit, when did you start crying? Embarrassing.

"I - you - Felonius..."

He stares, seems to realize that he's still holding you, and falls over. You're on top of him.

You hear the faint sound of the kettle whistling

You hear the faint sound of the kettle whistling. Your tea! Right, tea.

Shutting your eyes in embarrassment, you sputter, "Do you, uh... Tea?"

He continues to stare, seemingly in shock. "Does... this mean I have your forgiveness?"

You sit up and hide in your elbow. Why does he have to stare so intensely? What's so interesting about your face?

"We'll see..."

A/N: This takes place after the first Despicable Me movie. I am not including the second and third ones as of now because I find them mediocre. Gru has so much potential in the first movie. Thank you for reading the first chapter! There's more to come...
