It was chaos at the show before the performance, everyone was rushing about, nervous about the crowd waiting to buy tickets.
Elsa helped me pick out a costume to wear for the show, and it was a two-piece pink outfit. I had never worn something so revealing in my life, and I constantly wrapped my arms around my stomach. Elsa told me that I had to wear this, as I was the one to bring men to the show. I disliked being treated like this, like a piece of meat, but agreed nonetheless.
Part of me wished that Dandy would come and watch me perform, but he misliked this place now. He also wouldn't really care if it wasn't himself performing, the narcissistic idiot.
Eve helped me curl my hair, and she assured me that performing was not as scary as it seemed. I had the urge to tell her that I've been performing since I could walk, but I bit my tongue, not wanting to get on the freaks' bad side.
I did my own makeup, painting my eyelids pink with silver glitter, and my lips a lavender colour. I doused my cheek up with blush, and looked at the final product in the mirror. I for sure looked the best out of the whole show.
The other contortionist and I were to go on right before Elsa. We helped set up the silks, so they came down from the ceiling, but I snuck out before I had to help anymore. I guess I wasn't used to doing this much work.
Then, I had to help the other freaks sell tickets. Because I was wearing such a skimpy outfit, and because Desiree had three breasts, the freaks made us sell them.
Men, even with their families, stared at us with wide eyes, and Desiree always had something funny to say to them when she caught them staring at her breasts.
"You learn to deal with it," Desiree tells me, after we sold a ticket to a drunk man who looked very interested in Desiree's body. "You're a pretty girl, you'll get the same stares in a town like this."
Finally after we had sold every seat in the house, we went backstage to begin.
"Blair, you look great!" Jimmy says to me when I join him backstage. He looks me up and down, grinning, but I know it's in a friendly way. I know he's interested in Maggie.
"Thanks, Jimmy." I chime, and start to stretch, preparing to bend my body in strange ways.
Right after the pinheads, it's time for me to go onstage.
"Ladies and gents," Ethel announces, "Get ready to see these ladies do the impossible, bend their bodies in half, do incredible flips, I guarantee that it will freak you out!"
The other contortionist and I enter the stage, and we begin performing. The crowd oohs and aahs as we do strange things with our bodies, occasionally doing a rude pose on the silks that you may see at a strip club.
I watch the rest of the show backstage, and cheer along with everyone else at the end of it. I head back to my tent, tired from the performance, but proud of myself.
