Suga paced in the waiting room of the hospital tirelessly as he waited for a doctor to update him on Daichi's condition. The seizure had stopped about halfway to the hospital, but Suga never once let his guard down.
He didn't know why it happened, or even what caused it. All he wanted to know was if his best friend was okay. Daichi's car was still at the aquarium, but Suga didn't care about that right now.
"Mr. Sugawara?" A gruff voice called out, causing Suga's head to snap up. A man in a white lab coat was walking toward him; the doctor.
"How is he?" Suga immediately asked as the doctor stopped in front of him.
"He's fine for now. I understand you don't know what caused his seizure?" Suga nodded, so the doctor continued. "I looked at Mr. Sawamura's previous medical files. We discovered he had a brain tumor about four years ago. He had gone through chemotherapy, but it seems the tumor has come back."
Suga's heart stopped in his chest at the man's words. They hit him like a bullet to the heart. Suga swallowed the lump in his throat as he spoke weakly, his eyes filling with tears once again. "Is it bad?"
The doctor gave Suga a nod. "Mr. Sawamura has stage three brain cancer. If the cancer continues to grow at this rate, he will only have five months left. I'm sorry, but there's little we can do. Even with chemo, it will only give him an extra month..."
Suga almost started crying right then and there, but he contained himself as he asked the dreaded question. "What are some side effects of the cancer?"
"At this stage, he may experience severe headaches, memory problems, vision problems, speech problems, and paralysis on one half of his body. He may experience more seizures as well. As far as we can tell, he's only experienced the seizure, but he may begin to experience headaches soon... He's awake if you'd like to see him now."
Suga immediately nodded, his body feeling numb. As the doctor led him to Daichi's room, Suga did his best to not cry.
Why? Why was this happening to him? Daichi doesn't deserve this, Suga thought to himself. When they had reached Daichi's room, the door was open, but a curtain blocked Suga's view from him.
The doctor walked away, leaving Suga to stand alone outside of Daichi's room. He didn't want to see what was on the other side of the curtain, but he had to. Taking in a deep breath, Suga slowly made his way into the room, pushing the curtain aside gently.
The sight in front of him made his heartbreak. Daichi was hooked up to different machines. However, what really broke Suga's heart was how his best friend looked. Daichi was extremely pale, and he had defined bags under his eyes as if he hadn't gotten any sleep for days.
The man in the hospital bed noticed someone had entered the room, and slowly turned his head. When his eyes met with Suga's figure, he smiled weakly.
"Hey," the brunet greeted. Suga pulled a chair close to the bed and sat down as he smiled at his friend.
"Hey... How are you feeling?"
Daichi gave the man a weak shrug, letting out a cough. "I'm okay, I guess. Just a little tired. The doctors say once I get some rest, I should start to feel better, though."
Suga nodded, not having the heart to smile. What was he even supposed to say? He just found out his best friend has stage three brain cancer. How was he supposed to live with the fact that Daichi would be dead in five months?
"I'm sorry I never told you." Suga looked up, his eyebrows furrowed slightly. "About this. I just didn't want to worry anyone. Playing volleyball with the team was the only good thing I had in my life at the time. I wanted to forget about all this, but I guess I couldn't outrun it forever, could I?"
Suga opened his mouth to say something but decided against it. He didn't even know where to start. Instead, he grabbed Daichi's hand and laid his head on the edge of the bed.
"Don't apologize... I'm the one that's sorry for not noticing something was wrong... I'm sorry this is happening to you."
Daichi squeezed Suga's hand in his, not saying anything. They were just glad to be in each other's company. Suga felt Daichi's grip on his hand loosen slightly and he knew the man must've fallen asleep.
That's when Suga let it out. The grey-haired man cried and cried. He didn't even bother staying quiet as sobs wracked his body.
"I'm so sorry, Daichi," Suga managed to whisper between sobs. "I'm so sorry this happened to you."
°°°
Suga had fallen asleep beside Daichi, and around eight-thirty, a nurse had come into the room and told him to go home. He had groggily called for a cab, directing him to the apartment complex.
As reluctant as he was to leave Daichi's side, he knew he could always visit tomorrow. By the time he had gotten into his apartment, he was already tired again. Tanaka was nowhere to be seen, so Suga assumed he had gone back home.
Kicking off his shoes, Suga immediately went to the bathroom for a shower, not bothering to grab a change of clothes. He would just get them after he finished his shower. Suga spent an hour in the shower, his body aching from the position he had fallen asleep in.
He really didn't want to go to work tomorrow, but he knew he had to. After his shower, Suga went to his room and put on a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt before crawling into bed.
As soon as his head had hit his pillow, he was out, dreaming of a world where everything was okay.
°°°
Did I make things worse? Probably. Am I going to regret it? Absolutely. I don't really have anything else to say.
I guess I'll see you all in the next chapter.
Buh-bye.
