Chapter 2

When I finally got home, It was around twelve and no lights were on in the house. I walked up the front steps and unlocked the door. I prayed that my mom had already gone to sleep, but my prayer had fallen on deaf ears. As soon as I walked upstairs and into my bedroom, my mom bombarded me with questions.

“Where the hell have you been? I have been sitting in my bed, waiting for you! I was worried sick! I kept trying to call you but you never answered,” she said all in one breath.

“I’m sorry, I fell asleep at the library and got a late start on my way home,” I lied.

“Next time will you please call me on your way home, I don’t think I can handle another night like this one,”

“I’m sorry,” I kissed her cheek and turned to go into my bathroom.

“Goodnight, Lace,” my mom said and I heard a click as the door shut. Sighing, I stripped down to nothing and got into the shower. I let the water run over my sore body and massaged my neck.

I replayed the events from tonight and tried to make sense of it all. What knocked me into the bushes? And did it really bite me? Who were those men who saved me and what did they do after I fell asleep? I dismissed the incident as my imagination and turned off my brain as I dried off and got changed into my pajamas.

I slipped into my bed and turned off the lights before shutting my eyes, but I could not fall asleep. I tossed and turned all night. By the time I decided to just get up, it was 7:00. I poured some cereal and texted my best friends, Brad and Kendra, telling them that I would meet them at the school in an hour. I sat down and turned on the TV.

My mom walked down stairs and kissed my cheek muttering a "morning". She always left early with my little sister, Carson. Carson ran downstairs and jumped into my lap. She was only 7, and was 5 when my dad left us. I tickled her sides and she laughed, yelling at me to stop a couple of times before I obeyed. Mom worked a full time job, so I always took care of Carson.

“Bye, have fun at school.” I yelled after her. I heard the car start up and pull out of the drive way.

I waited thirty more minute before I took off towards the school. I walked to the front doors and waved at Brad and Kendra. Kendra wrapped me in a hug and Brad smiled down at me. Kendra had straight black hair, blue eyes and tanned skin. She was short like me, only 5'4". Brad was totally opposite, he had sandy brown hair, brown eyes and was 6'2". He was also tan. Then there was me, curly,  auburn hair, green eyes and 5'5" with freckles all over my face. We were a sight to see. We had been friends since middle school. We stood by each other when my dad left, Kendra's brother commited suicide, and Brad came out of the closet.

"Hey babe, how was work? I tried calling you but you didn't answer," Kendra told me.

"Sorry, I fell asleep at the library," I told her the same excuse that I used on my mom.

"Well, If that happens again, then you call me and I'll bring the party to you." Brad said. I just laughed. The bell rang and we made our way into the school.

The school day went by quickly, and before I knew it, it was lunch.

"Thank God it's Friday." Kendra said from behind me. I turned around and saw her swinging her lunch box. I took a bite of my pizza and washed it down with my Vitamin Water. My mind wandered back to last night and I decided to ask Kendra about it.
