TO BELONG TO SOMEONE

one hour

"I DON'T WANT to die," Regulus cried as he stared at her desperately. "I want to live and fall in love and get married and start a family!"

"Well, you can have all of that," Senara coaxed gently.

"No," he mumbled. "I can't. Because I have to kill you in order to get it."

"So?" she asked. "I'm no one."

"No, no you're not," he whispered, "you're more of a person than anyone I've ever met. You live without trying. You breathe fully. You touched not to harm, but to heal."

"Oh," she muttered.

"And, in my last days, because whether or not I take this locket, they've figured out my treachery and will find me and smash me to pieces, I want to know that I have you," he said desperately as he slipped one of the rings off his fingers.

"Well you already do," she said, confused. "I'm right here."

He stared at her with lips parted slightly. Oh.

"I want to marry you," he said as he gulped.

"I don't understand," she said as she shook her head.

"To marry someone is to give yourself to someone and they give themselves to you," he said. "You are each others and no one can take that away unless..."

"Unless what?" she asked.

"Unless you decide not to love each other anymore," he explained. "Or one of you passes on to the next world."

"The next world?" she asked. "You mean there's another one after this?"

"Hypothetically," he said with a small smile. "Will you marry me, Senara?"

"I guess so," she said with a small smile.

He slid the ring onto her left ring finger. It held a certain weight, one that she hadn't felt before, but she knew she'd had a ring on before.

"You are now my wife," he said. "Regulus and Senara Black."

"I have another name?" she asked.

"You have my name," he said. "Because you are mine."

"And what makes you mine?" she asked.

"You asked me what the alternative was," he said. "To power. I didn't have an answer that I wanted to admit."

"And what was it?" she asked.

She looked up at him. He smiled down at her as he held up her hand. The desperate look in his eyes was replaced with something else. She smiled as she adored the weight and the way his hands felt in hers. Was this what sunlight felt like?
