WHAT NOW?

chapter 8

Caroline had taken Hope to the park and Klaus was trying very hard not to follow them because he had promised that he would stay away unless she called him. To pass the time he went to his art room and picked up a brush, painting would help get his mind off of her and it seemed to work until he received a call.
“hello love,” he picked up with a smile “miss me already?”
“Klaus, something is wrong… I .. I can’t remember what happened but something is really wrong,” he could hear the panic in her voice and he quickly dropped the brush rushing out of the house.
“Caroline where are you?”
“still at the park…”
“I’ll be there shortly.”
His body was suddenly tense with worry but he tried not to get overwhelmed, he knew that ne needed to keep a clear head otherwise he’d lash out and make mistakes which he couldn’t afford to.
When he arrived at the park he found Caroline seated on a bench, Hope asleep in her stroller.
“Caroline?” his voice came out soft as he approached her and she slowly looked up at him, tears falling “what happened?” he sat next to her.
“I don’t know,” she couldn’t stop crying, “one minute I was seated on a picnic blanket with Hope and the next thing I remember is this,” she showed him a small cut on her wrist.
“why aren’t you healing?” he grabbed her wrist
“am human Klaus, I don’t know how it happened, I have this blank in my head and I can’t remember anything.” She quickly wiped the tears which wouldn’t stop falling no matter how much she tried “obviously I was compelled or something.”
Klaus was too stunned to speak so he pulled her into his arms, letting her cry it out.
“I don’t want to be human Klaus,” she sobbed, she remember the type of person she was when human and she did not want to go back to the shallow version of herself, the weak version.
“I know love, I promise we will fix this.” He held her even tighter as he fought his own emotions, he didn’t like seeing her like this.
“just how many things will go wrong? Bonnie is trying to restore her magic and Damon is still waiting for your blood,” she wiped more tears, taking deep breaths and trying to compose herself.
“you don’t have to worry about Damon, I already sent one of my hybrids to take the blood to Stefan and Bonnie is with Freya and Vincent, trust me, she’ll have her magic back in no time. Stop worrying about everything else,” he looked down at her and wiped the tears off her cheeks “come on, lets get you home.”

Just as they entered the compound Freya rushed up to Klaus, Hayley who was also there walked over to Caroline.
“hey, thanks for babysitting, hope she didn’t give you any trouble.” She smiled as she took Hope. Caroline was all cried out and had composed herself, just because she was human didn’t mean she should break down in front of everyone.
“no trouble at all, she was a sweetheart.” She forced a smile “how was your date?” she asked as she noticed Elijah standing near the fireplace and actively trying not to look at Hayley.
“it was great,” Hayley smiled.
“Nik, something happened… we’re not sure what but its big.” Freya moved him to the side
“can you be a little more specific sister?” his eyes didn’t leave Caroline, so far she was holding it together but he knew inside she was distraught.
“Vincent felt a power surge, someone performed a very big spell. He’s trying to figure out what it was and who performed it but I figured you’d want to know.” She explained
“a big spell..” he said mostly to himself, eyes still on Caroline “just how big?”
“we went to the cemetery and I caught traces of it, whoever cast it had help from dark magic..”
As Freya was explaining Vincent and Bonnie walked in.
“Care!” she rushed to her friend with a smile which faltered when she touched her “Caroline how are you human?” she asked and everyone turned to them
“I … I don’t know Bon, I blacked out and when I woke up I was like this,” she explained looking down.
“oh my gosh Care are you okay?” she hugged her
“am trying to be…” she whispered
“could it have something to do with the time travelling spell?” Bonnie asked looking at Bonnie
“time travelling?” Klaus came closer.
“why don’t we seat down?”
The group gathered around a fire pit and Hayley brought a bottle of scotch for everyone even though she wasn’t drinking herself.
“the spell was a time travelling one, I found the witch who did it but nothing came of it, I think she was compelled to kill herself if anyone ever asks her about the spell.” Vincent explained
“so our only lead is dead?” Klaus who was seated next to Caroline asked
“am afraid so…”
“so, someone might have gone back in time to get the cure and force it down my throat?”  Caroline was hugging herself “but why? I don’t know anyone here, I definitely haven’t made any enemies.” She could feel a headache creeping in.
“I haven’t seen Aurora in a while.”  Elijah spoke up
“Elijah,” Klaus frowned at him.
“Nik, don’t pretend to not know how jealous and possessive of you she is, if she saw Ms. Forbes as a threat she wouldn’t hesitate to do something about it. And its unusual of her to not be around you for more than a few hours, when was the last time you spoke to her?”
As his brother spoke Klaus let the words sink in and he knew Elijah was right, Aurora wouldn’t stay gone for so long especially when Caroline was around.
“am going to kill her!” he abruptly got up from the couch but Caroline grabbed his hand
“Klaus, we’re not sure if its really her and killing her won’t solve anything.” She said
“it’s the only plausible explanation.”
“Even so, I won’t let you kill your girlfriend,” he winced at the term, he hadn’t thought about Aurora in a while and even before Caroline showed up he wasn’t madly in love with her, he was just trying to relive the days they once had but it was long gone and he had accepted that.
“Care? Do you wanna be a vampire again?” Bonnie asked cautiously as Klaus sat back down
“I can’t even if I wanted to, Klaus’s blood couldn’t even heal my wound,” she showed her friend the small cut “because the cure is in my blood and its working against vampire blood. If I drink it and die, I die for good.” She explained and Bonnie hugged her again,
“am so sorry Care,” she knew just how much her best friend had grown into her vampirism, how much she loved the new person she had become.
“we’ll figure something out.” Klaus promised her, he too didn’t want her to stay human, the fact that she would grow old and die, leaving him alone scared him, the thought of losing her made his heart ache. “I’ll find Aurora and she’ll fix this.”
“brother, stay here with Ms. Forbes,” Elijah stood up “I will find Aurora and bring her back here.” He could see the worry and fear in his brother’s eyes, he knew staying with the blonde would soothe him a little bit, if he went out there he would take out his frustration on just anyone and it would be a blood bath. Klaus simply nodded and Elijah whooshed out of there.
