Chapter 11
“I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I’m with you.”
-Roy Croft
Elliot
Today is her big day. The big 1-8 and I have everything planned out. Joey has allowed for her to miss last period so I can start with her birthday plans. I drove her to school today so I lean against the side of the truck waiting for her to come out the school. She has no clue what we’re doing today. The necklace Stacey got her catches the sun as she strolls over to me. Helping her in the truck, the CD of our favorite songs continues to play as I take her home.
“El...” She looks at me but I shake my head. Once we’re inside I gently push her towards the stairs.
“Go change. Your clothes are on the bed.” Stacey helped me pick out what T should wear after I was interrogated about my plans.
After a couple minutes, she comes down the stairs with American Eagle dark wash skinny jeans and a pink Tommy Hilfiger sweater along with her trusty pair of tan Timbs. Smirking I take her to my house and she stares at me as I help her out. Once we’re done watching a couple movies, I put one of my ties over her eyes since I don’t have a blindfold. My mom helped me set up the backyard.
“El, what is....” I take the tie off her eyes and she gasps taking in the yard.
There is a fog machine that is creating fog around the entire backyard so it looks like something from a dream sequence. As I guide her over to where we’ll be eating dinner, she gasps again. A single white table is sitting underneath the tree that has multiple lanterns hanging from it. The light created gives the area a soft glow along with the small lanterns on the table. I'm not a romantic but I'll try to make this a birthday she'll never forget.
“Happy Birthday, Tiana.”
“El, this is....beautiful.” Helping her in her seat, I uncover our dinner. Pepperoni pizza, cheesesticks, and root beer. Her favorites.
“Babe, I wanted to tell you somethings about you. I couldn’t think of a good present to give to you so I figured my feelings were best.” She smiles as I pull my chair next to hers. Taking a deep breath, I prepare myself.
“Ever since we first met I knew things would never be the same. I was freshly adopted and you had just lost your parents. In a sense it seems like those horrible things had to happen to us or else we probably would have never met. I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to be your boyfriend for so many years because I’ve seen the way you’ve grown. This year especially we’ve had changes but I’m glad we overcome them.” Holding her hand I look deeply in her brown eyes. “I love the way your hair is always unpredictable and how it makes you yearn for longer different hair yet yours is perfect. I love your deep brown eyes and the way they look at me. I love your cute little ears that always get hot when I compliment you. I love your dazzling smile because when I see that I know I’ve made you happy. I love your mind even though you’ve always been smarter than me. I love your shoulders as they seem to carry the weight of the world. I think the part of you that I love the most is your heart.
You are so caring and kind. I can’t even count how many times you’ve put others before yourself. You deserve the world and I’ll do my best providing that. The extent of your love for me is unknown but know that mine is unconditional. I guess there is only one more thing for me to do and that is to tell you I love you.”
“El, I don’t know what to say. I love you so much.” She hugs me tight and I smile as I hold her in my arms. I want to be able to do this every day.
Unknown
“I'm watching them right now, boss.” I tell him as he impatiently asks me questions about what they’re doing.
“What are they doing?”
“They’re dancing around the yard. Nothing entertaining.” I shrug picking up one of Elliot’s picture frames with a picture of him and Tiana hugging.
“Is everything in motion?”
“Of course.”
“There’s no way it’s going to trace back to me right?” He's been asking me this same question for years. Rolling my eyes I move on to his trophy case. What kind of kid has a trophy case in their room? Vain much?
“Did it last time with her parents?” That was his first assignment for me kinda like a test and man did I ace that one.
“You’re right. I’m just being paranoid. Keep an eye on them. Make sure they don’t start asking any questions.”
“What about the other kid? He’s still a factor. He could blow this whole operation if he succeeds with his plan.”
“Send a message. Don’t mess it up this time.” He snarls and I take a step back from the window as Elliot turns toward the window. Sliding back into the darkness, I listen to the music he has playing. The kid has pretty good taste.
“Don’t mess it up? You told me not to kill her just make her hurt plus you’re the one that killed the boy’s father in front of him. I told you to make it look like an accident but you went and jumped the gun.”
“Look just make him stop. He’s getting too close and if they start talking about this together we’re screwed.”
“Whatever, man. I expect my money the next time you see me.”
Noah
Lying in my bed, I flip around the channels looking for something good to watch. It’s rare I’m home on the weekends but I don’t feel like partying this weekend.
“Noah, can we watch a movie with you?” Chris asks popping his head in the doorway.
“Sure.” They both come and pick different spots on my bed to lie. Chris lies next to me while Ben lies across the foot of bed.
Ben picks out Olympus Has Fallen. Tiana was raving about this movie but I haven't had the chance to watch it until now. As we watch the movie, I look at both of them. I miss hanging out with my brothers like this. It seems like everything has been spinning out of control. My grades have gone down ever since Tiana stopped being my tutor. My friends have been going crazy. I almost got caught selling one day and I swear I being followed. As one of the explosions happen, I hear something downstairs. Opening my bedside drawer, I unlock my gun safe and take out my gun.
“Stay here.” I tell both of them and they nod.
I run down the stairs when I hear my mom yell. My heart starts pounding hard as I turn the corner with my gun ready to kill whoever dares to hurt my mom. A man stands in front of my mom holding her by her shirt with his gun pressed to her chest. Though the shadows caused on his face hides most of his profile, I will never forget those bright green eyes.
“Who are you and what do you want?” In a measured tone I ask.
“You need to stop asking questions.”
“He sent you here? This is only proof that he...” Before I can even finish my sentence, he shoots my mom in the shoulder.
“Mom!” I yell surging towards her but I stop when he turns the gun on me. Footsteps rapidly hit the steps and I know Chris and Ben will be behind me in a couple seconds.
“Stop asking questions. I won’t hesitate to shoot you or your brothers next word you say.” As much as I want to tell him off there’s no way I’m letting them get hurt because of me. “That’s what I thought. Have a nice night.” He just strolls out my house like he was an invited guest and not someone who just shot my mother in cold blood. Rushing over to her, I put pressure on her shoulder wound.
“What was he talking about, Noah?” She asks shakily as the boys rush around getting washclothes, alcohol, and something to pull out the bullet with.
“I told you, Mom, that officer killed Dad. Now he’s sent a hit man after me for asking questions. I promise you, Momma, he will not get away with this.”
