Chapter 12

"From every wound there is a scar and every scar tells a story. A story that says, "I survived."

Elliott

Ducking a punch for this scrawny kid, I punch him in the stomach making him fall to the ground. The crackheads around us start cheering even louder as I drop to my knees and hammer my fists into his face repeatedly until my knuckles are warm with blood. When I see he's unconscious, I step back and look at my parents. They give me a thumbs up and twitch as the man running this fight checks the kid to make sure he's okay. Once he verifies that the kid is unconscious, he announces how much we've won.

"$1,000 to Slugger!" The crowd goes crazy.

The money is barely in my hands for a minute before my mom and dad snatch it from me. This is one of the biggest ones I've won but yet I won't get any. As we get closer to our apartment, they tell me to go on home and they're going to celebrate. Typical. Pain hits my stomach as I realize that I haven't eaten in almost 3 days. Opening the fridge, a few bugs crawl out revealing only a couple bottles of beer and moldy bread. Sighing I close it and go to my room. Lying on the bed, I try not to think about the bugs crawling all around me, the hunger pains I'm feeling, the fact that my parents are getting high right now, and even the sounds of a pimp beating one of his girls outside of the window.

Around midnight, I hear the door swinging open loudly and them laughing. Coming out the room, I smell wings and I almost cry at the sight. They place it on the table before going to their rooms to probably do more lines. Inside the box is at least 30 wings and a bucket of fries. Selfishly I eat most of it then hide the rest in my room. Rubbing my full stomach, I gaze out the window to the see the drug dealers sitting on the corner waiting for their possible customers. Soon enough my parents will be out there. I can't wait to get away from this life.

Noah

"Go long, Noah!" My dad yells as he throws the football.

I love these days when he's not working. He takes me to the park and we play football all day before going to the diner for a "strategy" dinner. Catching the ball, I do a victory dance in the area we've made the end zone. Once we're done our game, we walk to the diner. Shelly, the same waitress we've had for months, takes our order before joking that I have muscles that could kill.

"Tell me about the case of the week." Every time we eat here, he tells me about his case of the week which is basically the case that was interesting to him.

"There was this guy that came into the precinct and said that his wife and children were kidnapped. So we got help from a sister presincit of ours. One of the detectives and I go this really good lead so went without backup to the location. We found the family alone and tied up in the basement. It seemed whoever took them had gotten away but just as we were about to leave the house a man appeared in the doorway. I created a distraction which helped the family and I get away. When I came back to help, the man was gone and the detective was down on the ground bleeding. Some how the kidnapper had gotten Agent Waters gun and shot him. He's okay though. We even took a picture together when he was at the hospital. I think we'll be great friends."

"That's so cool, Dad." I stare at him wide-eyed.

My dad has been a police officers ever since I could remember. Mom always worries that something bad will happen to him on the job but i don't think. He's like superman nothing could ever happen to him.

Looking around the house, I search for my older brother, Joey. We're playing hide and seek. He's too big to ever win plus I'm a champ at this game. Running into my mom's office, she puts her fingers to lips signaling that she's on a call. I know he's in here. He always is. As I search I overhear her talking to someone sounding official.

"I don't care what he was just shot. I want him at my office in the morning. Just because he was shot does not mean he can escape these impending charges. It's time for Waters to take responsibility for his actions. We do not allow for crooked cops." She hangs up the phone and sighs. As I pass by the bookshelf I notice that the curtain behind her has feet sticking out of it.

Running behind her desk, I pull the curtain back and there is Joey. He picks me up and tickles me making me giggle. Mom starts to laugh along and joins in on tickling me.

"Tasha!" Dad yells making all of us stop. He comes running in the office scratched up and bruised.

"Tony, what happened?" She touches his face as he looks at us.

"Joey, take her out." As soon as those words pass his lips, I start trying to fight in Joey arms. As we walk out I hear Dad tell Mom that his brakes stopped working and someone is after him.

"Joey, what's happening? What happened to Dad?" I struggle to get out of his arms but he keeps me captive.

"Don't worry. Everything will be fine."
