Chapter 3
“You can not get ahead while you are getting even.”
-Dick Armey
Tiana
“Come on, T. It’s time to go.” I’ve been staring at their tombstones for a good 5 minutes. He puts his arm around my shoulders guiding me to the car. Today it’s just us and Stace is at home with some of her friends.
“Mom and Dad would be proud of you, Joey.” I tell him cutting through the music.
“Yeah? How’s that?”
“You have a successful career, a beautiful wife with a child on the way, and you are a great brother. I’m thankful to have you especially that night because I would have been waiting up for them for hours.”
Flashback
Mom and Dad said they would be here in 2 hours ago. Sitting on the couch I wrap a blanket around my body while I watch tv. Halfway through the show I fall asleep but I’m awakened by my big brother, Joey. Smiling I sit up to hug him but he leans back and sits next to me.
“Where’s Mom and Dad?” I ask looking up in his eyes. His face grows serious and he contemplates something.
“Tiana, what I’m about to tell you is going to be hard for you.” He holds on my hand. “Mom and Dad were in an accident. They were rushed to the hospital and surgery. Tiana, Mom and Dad died.” My heart falters when he tells me that.
“But they were supposed to be here an two hours ago. How? Why?”
“I know this is difficult, baby girl, but I’m here for you.” What he told me finally sinks in and I start sobbing into his chest. “I know.” He rubs my back soothingly.
“I know I’m not the easiest brother to have and I can be overbearing at times but I just want to do right by you. Mom and Dad made me promise when I went off to college that if anything happened to them I would become like a father to you. Stace and I probably don’t tell you enough but we’re proud of you. Everything that you’ve accomplished after you lost so much I proud to be your big brother.”

We’re all set up for the kill and now we’re just waiting for a clear shot. My thing is being precise because that’s one of the ways you don’t get caught. I don’t have a problem with Mrs. Waters so I don’t want to accidentally shoot her. They’re having dinner in their living room that has a giant glass window which gives me the perfect view of them. All we’re waiting for now for Mrs. Waters to get up from the table.
"Target in position." One of my boys tells me Mrs. Waters stands up moving giving me a clear target. Before I even get to pull the trigger the familiar sound of a gun firing echoes across the sky as I watch the glass shatter and Mrs. Waters fall to the ground.
"Pack it up." I yells in a hushed tone through our ear comms. As we drive away from the development I breathe out finally.
“Who was that?” Jerome asks out of breath.
“I don’t know but we need to find out.”

My phone rings while Tiana and I watch A Walk To Remember. Even though she hates chick flicks this is one of the only ones she will tolerate watching besides The Last Song. My head resting on her stomach as my phone continues to buzz.
“It’s your dad.” She tells me reaching for my phone that is lying on her nightstand.
“Hey, Dad.” I greet putting it on speaker phone.
