It's evening. It's that time when the pale stars are all sliding into their places. The whispering of the leaves is almost hushed. And all about them it's completely still, it's shadowy and sweet. It's a wonderful moment when, for lack of a visible horizon, the not yet darkened world seems infinitely greater. It's that moment when anything can happen, and anything can be believed in.

Cars are pulling up the driveway in front of the Mikaelson mansion. Inside there are many groups of people talking, while a live band plays classical music. Gianna stands with her siblings and Carol Lockwood, engaging in a conversation about all of the fancy decorations.

Damon joins them, handing the mayor a glass of champagne. "Hello, Carol."

"Hello." They clink glasses, before Damon turns his head to look at the Roberts'.

He lowers his voice and whispers to Carol subtly. "Hanging out with your new besties?"

"I'm the mayor, Damon. When the oldest and deadliest family of vampires moves into your town, you welcome them with a smile." The mayor makes sure to keep her voice down, not wanting Gianna or anyone else to overhear them.

"Hmm, well at least you know who you're borrowing that cup of sugar from."

"I'm trying to protect this town. They've assured me they want peace, and I've assured them that I'd enforce it."

It's at this time, that Kol walks over and kisses Carol's hand as he greets her. "Mayor Lockwood. We haven't formally met. Kol Mikaelson. I hope your lovely town embraces us just as much as we plan to embrace it."

He pretends to just now realize Gianna's presence, when really, the only reason he had come over was to be closer to her. Kol takes this opportunity to grab her attention, and gently takes ahold of her hand. "Hello darling."

And just as he had with Carol, he kisses Gianna's hand. But this time seems more intimate, like he has something to prove. And when Gianna looks into his playful brown eyes, she becomes mesmerized. For a brief moment, it feels as if the world has become frozen. Neither Kol nor Gianna can look away, both becoming unforgettably lost in each other's eyes.

Damon awkwardly clears his throat, and holds out his hand to shake Kol's. "Damon Salvatore. Have we met?"

Kol is quick to turn and face Damon, but he doesn't shake his hand. In fact, he doesn't even let go of Gianna's. He simply stares at the blue-eyed vampire in front of them, completely unimpressed by his presence.

Kol shakes his head, "I've met a lot of people. And you don't particularly stand out."

Feeling the awkward tension, Gianna pulls away from Kol's grip. She walks away with her brother and sister, making sure to drag Kol along with them. Damon and Carol are now left to discuss things by themselves.
