In the early parts of the 6th century, there resides one of the smallest towns in civilization, Fulda, Germany. And despite it being a relatively peaceful place, it's also a town very far removed from normal stability. A well-to-do German heiress, Merga, resides there. Now onto her third husband, Merga finds out that she has magic. Desperate for a child of her own, she signs away her soul in order to be able to conceive.

Having returned to power after a long exile, staunch Catholic reformer, Prince-abbot Balthazar don Swaurtz, orders a massive witch hunt. According to him, it's to purge all liberal and ungodly activities from the world.

Of the over 200 people who are accused and executed for being witches in Fulda, Merga is considered to be the most famous. And the circumstances that led to her death are very unfortunate and ill-timed. She had just returned to the city after arguing with one of her husband's employers. It's also at this time, she finds herself pregnant for the very first time.

What makes Merga's situation so odd to the other townsfolk, is that she had been married to her second husband for 3 years. And not once, had they ever before been able to conceive. Naturally, the townspeople start to believe that the only way she could have possibly gotten pregnant now, is through her having sex with the Devil himself! Along with that lascivious supernatural act, Merga ends being framed for having killed her second husband. Not only that, she was said to have murdered one of the children of her current husband's employers. And then rumors were spread that she had attended a Black Sabbath a couple years prior.

Though none of these things are true, only ten months later, Merga is burned at the stake for being a witch. Her late husband is left alone to raise their children, a set of twins. A siphon son and a daughter with magic.

Little did he and Merga know, their children would be the beginning of something more. And centuries later, a set of twins would be born. The same kind of magic and the same faces, a set of doppelgänger twins with more power than even the so called, 'Original Witch'.

People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own souls. A person does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. They need to spend time crawling alone through dark, skin crawling shadows, to truly appreciate what it is like to stand in the sun.

Sarelle Roberts has avoided facing her own shadow for a long time. Long enough to know that she casts a shadow on everything no matter where she stands. And it does no good to move from one place to another to try and save things; because the shadows always seem to follow her. Gianna on the other hand, has always chosen a place to stand where she can't hurt anyone. She chooses a place to stay where she won't do very much harm, and then she stands in it for all she's worth, always facing the sunshine. And it's times like this, where Gianna is tied up and quiet, that Sarelle wonders how far that'd ever really gotten her.
