Chapter 34
“What are you doing?”
Sloan jumped when the words reached her ears. Dropping the curtain back into place, she waited until her face was no longer red in embarrassment before turning towards the person who had caused her to jump in the first place. Sydney stood there, her hands on her hips and one eyebrow raised.
“Nothing,” Sloan lied, making the woman chuckle slightly.
“Please tell me you’re not looking out the window and waiting on Adam to show up. You’re one of us now,” Sydney said while shaking her head. “You need to start acting like it.”
Sloan stared at the woman, and the longer she stared, the more annoyed Sydney began to look. “What do you mean?”
“If you want your man, you go after him. You don’t wait for him to fall into your hands, nor do you wait until the day that he decides you’re not worth the wait. Believe me, I’ve waited before and wasted years of my life.”
Sloan reached back towards the curtain, pulling it to the side to stare out at the trees beyond this cabin. Adam was out there somewhere, and if she were being honest with herself, she would admit that she wanted to go find him. The only question was which way did he go? She could wander into the forest and be lost for days.
“It wouldn’t happen,” Sydney said with a sigh. “Even if you wanted to get lost, we’d be able to track you.” Walking towards the door, Sydney yanked it open before glancing back at Sloan. “Are you coming?”
“Can you read my mind?”
Sydney blinked at her before stepping out of the cabin without answering Sloan’s question. Sloan stood there for a couple of seconds, wondering whether she should follow the woman or stay. She didn’t want to seem desperate, didn’t want to seem more attached than she should be. But Adam was out there, and not only him, but Slator was out there somewhere too. The longer they stayed gone, the more she thought of the things that could happen to the two of them. The more she began to think, the worse her thoughts became until she was standing there clutching the curtains in her hands so hard that she was afraid she was going to rip them apart.
“You better hurry.”
For the second time in minutes, Sloan jumped. Looking behind her, she saw Amaya smile at her from the hallway. “If you don’t hurry, Sydney really will leave you. She’s a little more, how would you say it…”
“Bitchier than the rest!” Sydney called out from outside the cabin, making Amaya laugh.
“What she said,” Amaya whispered as she shook her head in amusement. “Will you do me a favor?” Sloan nodded her head, and when she remembered Amaya couldn’t see the action, she opened her mouth, but before she could say a word, Amaya began speaking. “Ask Ally how long they’ll be gone for me?” Amaya glanced away for a moment before turning back towards Sloan. “I know they’ve only been gone for a day, but there is something in the air. If Korbin can’t come back to the cabin, I want to be at the house. Tell her that for me?”
