"Daisy, the doctor agreed to change your medication, but the first few weeks will be filled with side effects," Stef informed her daughter as they were standing in their backyard.
"I know the drill," Daisy commented with a sad expression. Stef hauled her in for a hug.
A few weeks had passed since Daisy had started her new medication. In the beginning the side effects were horrible. It made her lightheaded and constantly nauseated. By now she only got dizzy when standing or nauseated around certain smells. Mr. Timothy had noticed that she had answered questions in class without shaking. He had informed her mother of the progress, which she shared him her wife. They were both very proud of their daughter. Even Marianna had told the family of how Daisy had performed in class.
One hectic morning, Daisy accidently took a double portion of medication without noticing. Everyone was in a hurry to get out the door in time. Around lunch time the same thing happened. Daisy had been so occupied by learning a new chord on the guitar with Brandon, that she had taken a double the amount she was supposed to. By the end of the school day, she felt awful. Her entire body was screaming in pain, her legs were weak, and her head felt like it was drowning.
"Are you alright there, sweetheart?" Lena asked as they got into the car. "I feel sick," Daisy muttered utterly exhausted. Lena put her hand on her forehead, not hot. "No fever," she said. Worried she put the car in drive and went home. Daisy ignored the others and left for her room. All she could think of was sleeping.
Jesus and Marianna looked at each other, sharing a worried look. Daisy would usually do homework with Marianna once they got home. Brandon explained that they had been busy during breaks at school and that she was probably just tired.
Later that evening, Stef arrived. She was in her usual happy mood, kissing her wife and saying hello to all of her children. Lena had warned her of Daisy feeling ill.
"Knock, knock," Stef said before entering Daisy's room. It was small yet they had fitted in a desk and bed.
"How are you feeling, Daise?" she asked as she sat down on the edge of the bed. The teen didn't move. "Daisy?" Stef asked worried. She shook her shoulder gently, waking up the dazed girl.
"Hey mom," she mumbled. She flashed a smile and turned back over. "I'm good," she mumbled into her pillow. Realising just how awful her daughter must feel to not give her a hug, Stef left her alone. Worried, she went downstairs to talk to her wife.
Lena was in the middle of making dinner. More specifically she was making a one-pot spaghetti dish and a smaller one fitting Marianna's diet. They discussed their daughter while cutting vegetables.
Upstairs, Daisy decided to take a shower to wake up. She felt drunk, the floor moving and her body intoxicated. Not in the fun way. The bathroom door was locked. "Can I take a shower?" she asked, knocking on the door. "Give me a minute," replied Jesus from within the bathroom. He had just taken a shower and was getting dressed. Exhausted from the small walk from her bed to the bathroom, Daisy leaned against the wall. She closed her eyes for what felt like a second.
"It's free. Daisy?" Jesus said, standing in the doorframe. She muttered a thank you and went in, closing the door behind her.A thud form upstairs followed by Jesus screaming. "MOMS!" That's all it took for Stef to run through the kitchen and up the stairs. The second she reached the top of the stairs, she saw Daisy on the floor, clearly passed out and Jesus hovering above her with a panicked look on his face. Stef pulled Jesus away from his sister and quickly dropped to her knees next to Daisy. She brushed her hand over her face to move the hair out of the way and check for a fever. Her skin was cold and pale, not a fever then. Her breathing was irregular and shallow.
"Lena! Get the car!" Stef yelled down to her wife. Lena frantically looked for her keys. Once found, she darted out of the house to get the car started. In the meantime, Stef had picked up her daughter, carrying her bridal style down the stairs.
"Brandon, you're in charge until we get back," she said as she walked past her children. They all looked terrified at the scene unfolding before them.
A few hours later Lena called home. "Hey Brandon, just to update you. Daisy is alright. It was a reaction to her medication," she informed him. He nodded, then realised she couldn't see him, "okay, thanks for letting us know." There was a small pause on the line. Brandon checked the phone to see if it had been disconnected.
"How is everything at home? Did you eat dinner?" Lena suddenly asked, being a worried mother. "Yes, mamma. We got it all under control at home," Brandon informed her, feeling proud that he had handled the situation at the house.
