Chapter Twelve- Work Together

Peyton's POV

I leaned back in my seat and looked up at the white ceiling above me. In this moment of silence, I thought about all that has happened over the past month. It was crazy to think that I almost fully mated with Amelia. It was crazy to think that I was actually considering being in a real relationship with her. Only a month ago, I had a deep hate for the girl but now, I had a deep love for her. It was all incredibly ridiculous to me.

Suddenly, the phone on my desk began to ring, causing me to jump in fright and almost fall out of my chair. "This is Alpha Jones speaking," I stated as I patiently waited for the whatever information was coming my way.

In the span of five minutes, the person on the other side of the line informed me that one of our highly respected elders was ambushed by a group of rouges and that a number of Alphas were to be flown down there immediately. It was alarming news and made me face reality, that these rouges were becoming more and more dangerous by the minute. If something was not done about them soon, more than a few packs could be hurt.

I quickly spoke with Matthew about my plans before instructing him to help me choose a few members to bring with me. In a few hours, I would be in an unfamiliar city surrounded by unfamiliar faces while we grieve over an unfamiliar elder.

The moment I saw the snow white hair, my heart leaped in joy. I screamed his name before jumping into his arms and squeezing him tight. "It's been too long," I mumbled, the side of my face pressed against his chest.

He pulled away, stared at my face, before finally responding. Shadow said, "Geez, I feel like I haven't seen you in ages." I smiled, the corners of my mouth practically slicing my face in half. I followed him onto the plane, hoping that we could sit together until  I saw Amelia. Shadow must have seen her too because in the corner of my eye, I could see him slightly grimacing.

"Do you want to sit with me?" he asked, his eyes shining with hopefulness. I glanced back at Amelia, noticing how she watched our interaction. I shook my head slowly before taking my seat next to my mate.

"You didn't have to sit with me if you didn't want to," she sighed, her eyes constantly wandering around the room. When I didn't reply she said, "Are we going to talk about what happened or are we going to constantly be awkward around each other?"

"We halfway mated, that's it. There's nothing to talk about," I said in a low voice, worried that someone might overhear our conversation.

"So you don't want to fully mate?" She paused to look me in the eyes but I tried to keep my gaze somewhere else. "You are so damn confusing, Peyton. Do you want to be together or not?" I finally met her glare, surprised to see how hurt she was- because of me. I cupped the side of her face. She slowly relaxed against my hand, allowing her eyes to slide shut.

"I do want to be with you. I'm just not sure if I'm ready."

"You sure seemed ready when I was fucking you," she spat before she pulled her head away and moved to sit in a different seat. Frustrated and surprisingly exhausted, I turned to look out the window, wanting the beautiful sight of the clouds to be the last image I saw before I dozed off.

I woke to the sounds of growls and snarls. It seemed to be evening by the darkness of the sky and when I looked around in the plane, it was empty, not a single person in sight. I stumbled to my feet, still groggy from my nap. I followed the sounds of angry wolves until I was outside of the plane, surrounded by untransformed wolves and a massive group of rogues. Of course, it was rogues.

This had to be their plan. They knew if they killed someone very important in the wolf council that we would gather together to come to the scene of the crime. There were only five Alphas, surprisingly, that came to be apart of the funeral and with those five Alphas was their packs.

Half of the packs seemed to be already fighting against the rouges. The only ones not fighting was my pack and Amelia's.

"There you are! I told the rest of the pack to stay back because I wasn't sure what you wanted us to do," Matthew said when he approached me, his canines already visible as if he was on edge. I looked between the group of rogues and our packs and I knew it would be nearly impossible to beat them.

"Where's Amelia?" I asked. He pointed to my mate who seemed to be yelling at one of her pack members.

"We need to work together if we're going to beat these guys," I stated once I was in her line of hearing.

"I figured you would say that," she said, not bothering to make eye contact. She shifted almost immediately, causing a chain reaction within her pack where they shifted as well. I told Matthew my commands and in a few minutes, we had all shifted and were prepared to fight, together.
