Chapter Twenty One- Protector

Amelia's POV

"I feel like we've been through this before," I stated as I watched my mate change in front of the mirror for the tenth time. "You look beautiful in all of those dresses."

"You may think so but I do not," she replied as she struggled to unzip the current dress she was wearing. Sighing, I unzipped the dress for her, pausing to kiss the skin that was exposed. Peyton instantly relaxed, allowing me to continue my kissing. "No, no- stop. I have to focus on getting ready."

Groaning, I returned to my seat on the bed, moving to the perfect angle so I could see Peyton as she stripped. She seemed to notice my stare and decided to hide in the closet to change.

I glanced at the clock. It read 6:45. At seven, our guests would be arriving and our pack members would be preparing the home for a lovely celebration. Even though the pack was still upset about us joining together, we managed to get everyone to cooperate for at least another night.

This was Peyton and I's celebration party, which was a casual way of wolves getting married. Compared to humans and the way they celebrate, wolves were more chill. Occasionally, you will see a couple of wolves having a huge wedding or a traditional wolf ceremony but that usually because one of the wolves was a human before or because that was just what they wanted.

But Peyton and I weren't exactly into the huge wedding so we decide a simple sharing of rings was fine. So basically, we were having a wedding or simply, becoming one officially. In the werewolf community, these type of things happened immediately after the mates had found each other. But Peyton and I had our difficulties.

"How about this one?" Peyton asked as she stepped out of the closet, wearing a magnificent light blue dress that hugged her waist like a second skin and flared outwards at the bottom.

"I'm going to say what I've been saying for the past thirty minutes," I replied. "You look beautiful." I came by her side once more, my lips placing a small kiss on her cheek for reassurance. But to be honest, I just didn't want to sit for another thirty minutes while she tried on the rest of the dresses in her wardrobe.

Sadly, I didn't look as great as she did. I was wearing a simple black dress, something that I was uncomfortable wearing but was forced to wear it because of my mate. But since it made her happy, I wore it.

"Okay, okay. Let's go," she sighed. Grabbing her hand, I led her downstairs, surprised by the amount of wolves that were already here. Not only were both of our enormous packs here but a few other Alphas from other packs were here, including the Alpha with the white hair Peyton has talked so much about.

He came to greet us first. "You can back out anytime," he whispered into her ear as he squeezed her against his chest.

"She can hear you," my mate whispered back, a smile forming on both of their faces.

"I know," was all he said before they finally separated. He gave me a fake smile before heading off in the other direction.

"I don't like him," I stated, allowing her arm to loop through mine as we pushed through the crowd.

"You barely know him," Peyton responded as she continued to smile at our guests, who were dressed quite nicely. "Are you afraid of a little competition?"

"Of course not." We pulled away from each other for a moment, including ourselves into our guest's conversations, making sure to tell everyone thank you for coming. I was currently talking to an old friend of mine and Peyton was talking to a Beta of a pack that lived across the world. We said our good byes before joining hands and walking onward.

Later on in the evening, our exchanging of rings began. We had an Elder come to unite us and join as one. He prayed over us at first, hoping that we will have a long life of love and safety. And then, our rings were brought out and were forced to say a few words to one another.

"So, yeah, I may have hated you back then and sometimes, I still kind of do. But instead of hate filling my heart, love is there now. I love you, Peyton Jones and I'm proud to call you my mate," I said as I ended my small speech. By the time I was done, tears were forming at the corner of her eyes, a sincere smile plastered on her face, causing a few wrinkles next to her eyes. "And with this ring, I bound us forever."

Slowly, I slid the ring onto her finger, my wolf howling in joy that she was forever mine. It seemed like only yesterday we were calling each other names but it had only been a few months, maybe. And in the few months, we found each other and love grew from that. If someone had told past me that I would fall in love with my enemy, I would say they were crazy.

"I love you too," she stated before wrapping her arms around my neck, connecting our lips and reigniting the sparks that are always present when we touch. I kept the kiss short, ending it once we were out of breathe.

Our friends clapped for us, even though they were probably in shock from what was happening. And even though our pack hated our joining together, they clapped and yelled as well.

We stepped down from the stage, making sure to shake hands with the Elder that took the time to wed us. I continued to smile at our happy guests until we came to one in particular- Valdez.

"What are doing here?" I asked him, catching Peyton's attention. She stared at him with wide eyes.

"I just came to congratulate you two. Congratulations," he said, smoothly.

"Thank you but I think you should go," Peyton replied, her grip on my hand tightening. I looked down at my mate, surprised by the hostile look she was giving Valdez.

"I know when I'm not wanted!" His arms were raised as he nodded his head, eyeing us with his dark, questioning eyes. "I just came to warn you. I will be coming back and next time, I won't be so easy to get rid of." He glanced between us before pushing through the crowd to get to the door. Three wolves I hadn't noticed before were following behind him, almost as if they were there to protect him.

We were the ones that needed the protecting. Not him.

"I need some air," Peyton breathed before stepping away. Allowing her to go outside, I went to find my Beta before commanding him to get our best wolves outside to watch the building. After talking to him, I went out to the balcony to find my mate.

Her dress flowed with the wind, revealing her curvy legs, goosebumps forming on the smooth skin. She stood out against the darkness of the sky, her pale skin gleaming like the stars.

"I'm so tired, Amy," she stated, not bothering to look back at me. I took that as my cue to join her so I did as I leaned against the ledge next to her, my eyes staring at the side of her face. There were dried tears on her cheeks, her eyelashes wet.

"I know you are," I replied as I brushed her new tears away with the pad of my thumb. My heart broke for her because I knew how she felt. These past few months have been complicated and they only seemed to get worse. "It'll be over soon. I promise."

"How do you know that? You heard Valdez. He's coming back." She looked at me this time, her eyes wide from anxiety and fear. Without replying, I pulled her against my chest, our arms wrapping around one another as she cried into my shoulder.

"I won't let anyone hurt you." I sighed, my hand rubbing her back as I placed a small kiss on her head. "I won't let you fall this time."
