Lukas immediately jumped off the tree carrying his bag in one hand. "Komm her kleiner Mann. Lass mich dir genauer ins Gesicht sehen." The old man said. Lukas looked at him in his eyes. "I feel brave doing this," he thought. He could tell something very bad was about to happen to him if he weren't to do something. "Mein Mutter ruft mich an. Ich muss los, es tut mir leid." He said, stumbling on his words.

"Das ist in Ordnung, deine Mutter kann warten." He said with a wide smile. "Mein Zuhause ist nicht weit weg, möchtest du mit mir kommen?" He said with a smile. "Nein, danke." Lukas replied. "Möchtest du ein schokolade?" The old man asked. "Es tut mir leid, aber ich muss gehen." Lukas said slowly backing away from the man.

The old man kept on trying to persuade him to go with him and he kept on trying to decline. He didn't like how the old man was shifting the conversation, so he tried to keep a distance.

*Church bell rings

Lukas took that as a sign to run back home. It was already 5 in the afternoon. Mother would be worried sick. Should he run? His legs were stiff and didn't look like they were going to move. "Are they paralyzed due to fear?" He thought.

"Vielleicht." The old man said.

Lukas snapped out of looking at his leg and focused his attention on the old man. He was getting closer to him. Lukas had to do something. "Move!" he thought to himself, heart pounding. "Move!"

The man started laughing.

Lukas let go of his backpack and started running. Adrenaline coursed through his veins. Heart-pounding, lungs screaming. He had to make it through the forest! He looked back and could see the old man smiling still in the distance, waving. "Waving?" Lukas almost tripped as he looked back and pushed harder. Picking up speed as he went. The branches tearing off pieces of his clothes leaves breaking under his feet. The cold bit his lungs as they continued screaming. His heart was hot and his face stung from the trees hitting his cheeks. As he entered deeper into the forest the birds scattered and shrieked as squirrels ran around in chaos. Wolves howled while birds chattered. The owls hooted and Lukas was still running.

He was running in what felt like forever. New trees kept coming, all darker than the previous. All bigger than the previous, his lungs kept screaming. But he kept running.

Once he saw his trail of white pearly pebbles on the forest floor he stopped to catch his breath.

"Schließlichz!"

As he came into a full stop with his bike in view, he breathed in for the first time and his lungs struck like someone had punctured his chest. "Argh!" he screamed. He slowed down his breathing to where he was at full control and slowly but surely breathed longer. Once his senses came back, his whole body was hurting. And realized that his left cheek was bleeding. "Mist," he said in realization. "Mama wäre verrückt wenn sie das sah!"

His clothes were full of mud and his shoes were definitely at breaking point. Breaking point. Oh no. He spun around looking for any signs of the old man. The sun was setting. It must have been 7 already. The sky was getting pink. "I should head home."

He grabbed his bike and started biking. Still traumatized from the old man, his head was spinning. "Besser Sicher als nicht!" He said laughing. And continued biking home fast, trying to come up with an excuse as to why he looked like that.

Every few minutes of biking, he would always turn back to look at the road. It's as if someone was following him. But no one could, right? He was all alone on the road. His house was just within reach. The town was not far away, and no one lived here. He decided to speed up and get the troubling thought out of his head. What did he forget? He was right outside of his house but couldn't think of anything. The feeling of someone following him remained.

He sneaked his way home from the farm to add more mud onto his clothes and fill his bike with mud and dirt.

"Where is your backpack?"
