As the sharp, ear splitting shrill of the school bell ring throughout the halls, chairs screech against the floor and loud thumps of backpacks drum on the tables. Voices whirres in the air, buzz of excited laughter and chatter resonated in the classroom while impatient students piled to the exit. You lean against your seat with a tired sigh, throwing your book aimlessly in your bag before zipping it close. Gazing longingly out the window, you stare at the breathtaking sun setting at the horizon, behind, clouds crawled on the bright soft golden shaded atmosphere while a slit of midnight blue crawled from the corners.
A chair in front of you creaks, your eyes flickered to your bestfriend situating himself on an empty chair at the desk in front of you. On his hand is his phone, thumb lightly tapping the keypad. It was a usual sight to see from the boy every end of your classes, though you notice these past couple of days his focus on it intensified as though it was an incurable addiction.
You raise a brow expectantly, when your eyes connect he flipped his phone close. “What?” He questions innocently.
“Gotta tone it down a bit when using your phone, you've done nothing but stuck your nose on it. ” You comment. “What're you doing anyways? Trouble or something?”
He shakes his head. “No, just reading.”
“Alright,” Squinting your eyes at him suspiciously, he was never the person to close his phone around you. In fact, he only does that when there are strangers or he's trying to hide something, though he'd never do the latter on you, just this time.
Akise Aru, you've been friends with him since chilhood, actually you have been living with him and his family for years now since your parents decided to return back home in the country side to take care of the family farm. Working in the city didn't cut off to provide for your tuition and daily needs as a student, when they found out they could earn twice as much if they restart the farm they packed their bags and left you to Akise's parents care.
The Aru's were very welcoming of you, they act as though you were their own as well, and you were grateful for it.
“Ready to go?” The boy hiked the strap of his backpack on his shoulder, slipping his phone in his pants.
You sighed exasperatedly. “How come you still wait for me? Didn't the serial killer died a few weeks ago? I might as well be considered safe at this point.”
“He'd gone dormant, not died, so no you're not safe yet.” Akise clarifies as the two of you exits to the hall. “Besides, Mom and Dad would kill me if they were ever to find out that I let you walk home alone, you know how they are.”
Crisp cool breeze of the wind blowing past you caressed your skin the moment you and Akise stepped out of the building and into the sidewalk. You close your eyes, savoring the serene atmosphere with infrequent sound of vehicle horns and motorcycle rumbles. The city has been surprisingly calm these past couple of days, you weren't complaining. It was refreshing to finally feel you didn't have to look over your shoulder from time to time and check for any danger approaching.
Some were still shaken up from the series of incidents jumping everywhere around the city, from Serial killer leaving bodies of defenseless women—adults or teenagers—on the streets to bombing of buildings that caused thousands of casualties.
“I'd tell them I told you to.” Complaining with a frown you casually kick a pebble a little too hard than expected, it darted across the ground hitting a trash can.
The can shook and an object resting above, a large cardboard, tipped over the lid and falls over some small kittens grouped next to it covering them.
