Dad and I spent the night reading up on Thermonuclear Astrophysics. It was pretty interesting, but it also made my brain hurt. And I was pretty distracted. I knew there was more to this than just finding the cube. If Coulson brought up the Avengers Initiative to Dad, they were expecting a war. I, for one, wasn't willing to fight in their war. It wouldn't end well if people discovered the true source of my powers. Which, again, made me wonder why Dad agreed to this.

As I laid on the sofa, the words on the page became hazy, making me throw the packet down and huff. "This is a bad idea," I stated, staring up at the high ceiling.

When I didn't receive a response, I turned my head to look at Dad. He was completely enraptured by his monitors, making me roll my eyes. I looked around for anything I could use to gain his attention. It would be so easy if I could just shut off his monitors, but the last time I did, he was less than pleased. I needed to talk to him, and making him mad wouldn't result in a friendly chat. Using my powers, I made the lights flicker, but he didn't flinch. Then, I let my wisps tug at his shirt, but again, nothing.

"Dad?"

Silence.

"I'm getting Captain America's shield tattooed on my stomach," I tried, knowing how much he resented the man after the endless stories from his childhood. But even that didn't make Dad move. I growled, realizing if I wanted his attention, I needed to tear his eyes away from the screens.

Concentrating, I mutated into a pure sphere of golden energy and floated over the couch. In this form, I could still hear and see everything going on, which made it easy for me to glide in front of Dad's face. He blinked and backed away from the desk, giving me room to transform back into my human form. I firmly stood on the hardwood floor with my arms crossed over my chest and an annoyed grimace on my face.

"Welcome back to reality, Dad. The same reality where your daughter has been trying to get your attention for the past ten minutes."

"Oh, what's up, kiddo?"

I had to refrain from rolling my eyes. "This is a bad idea. Why did you agree to let me in on the search? You and I both know this is more than finding the Tesseract. And I don't like the fact that Coulson or S.H.I.E.L.D seems to know a certain secret."

"This is us-time. We're bonding," Dad defended. "And they're spies. I'm sure he was only pretending."

"You're lying. I know they know. I overheard you and Nick Fury talking. The only thing I didn't hear was my own father trying to deny their claims. You were too concerned with yourself and your reputation."

"Check your teenage attitude, please," he chastised, and I rolled my eyes. "Again, they're spies. I didn't tell them anything, and I gathered they know next to nothing. So, it's fine." he finished with a nonchalant shrug.

"This isn't funny, Dad," I stated, feeling my nails dig into my palms at my sides. "If they really know about me, about my powers, they're gonna use me for their own personal gain. You heard Coulson."

Dad gestured for me to calm down with his hands. "No, I'm sure he didn't mean anything by that. You're only going to help find the Tesseract. That's it. I'll make sure of it."

"So will I," I muttered, hugging myself for comfort. Dad wrapped his arms around me and rested his chin on the top of my head.

"Don't worry, Serena. I got your back."

I nodded and hugged him back. Dad guided us to the couch and I laid down, my head on his lap. While he read through my discarded packet, he carded his fingers through my hair, lulling me to sleep. It wasn't a peaceful slumber because thoughts continued to swirl through my mind. What were we getting ourselves into? The blonde, Thor, and the raven-haired man, Loki were Gods. We were just people. What chance did we have? What else was there besides the Tesseract?
