Left To Defend Myself

"Where are we going?" Asked a sad and stunned Rachel. We were walking away from Sian who was once impaled by a walking stick until I pulled it out of her chest for future use.

"To my house for weapons, then finding my sister" I replied, my eyes stung from the tears and my emotions were mixed with anger, distraught and determination. I had killed a friend and watched one turn. I was NOT going to let anymore people go, let alone my five year old sister.

"How do we know she'll still be at school? What if the zombies have got there first?" Jess asked, treading on dangerous ground what with my feelings all over the place. I closed my eyes and continued to walk, trying not to think about Issy being ripped apart, ripping herself apart, dead, or one of the walking dead.

"She's alive" I answered, walking quicker when we noticed zombies in the car park attacking teachers. We ran past and out the gate, me hitting the zombified lollipop lady as we crossed the road to get to my house. Thank god I lived near the school, I had my lighter there that was really a proper candle one and we'd be able to get some knives too. As soon as we rounded the corner to my road I noticed that my front door had been knocked down.

"Bloody hell" I murmured to myself.

"Is that your house?" Andy asked me.

"Yeah" I replied, running to it then making my way over the bashed down door. Lights were smashed, furniture torn apart and loads of things were missing. Including the "family" car outside. I ran upstairs to check the boiler room where we kept the suitcases to find water running down the hallway but nothing else. "They fucking ran away" I said, shocked that they didn't even bother to call me. "They left me" I said again, even though I hated their guts and they hated mine, they left me to defend for myself. That was my fucking birthmother and she doesn't care about me.

"Sorry Ivy" Molly said sheepishly behind me, she was the only one that followed me. Once my shock settled down, rage took its place and all I wanted to do was kill someone. Preferably my mum and Darren but a couple zombies would do. I charged past her and back down the stairs, into the kitchen grabbing the biggest knife there.

"DON'T follow me" I ordered to everyone then I stormed out to face five zombies. They were all my neighbors, one just a boy, but he was dead anyway. I charged at them, stabbing the first three, one in the head, one in the stomach and the other in it's back. I slashed another's stomach open until I came to the boy, walking to me with immense slowness. My anger didn't leave me as I stormed over to him and slit his tiny throat. He toppled onto me, staining my clothes with what little blood he had. I just knelt there, the boy lying at my knees. My strength disappeared as I stood up and trudged back into the house. Everyone was searching for potential weapons, except for Andy who was sitting on my sofa, holding his head.

"What's the matter?" I demanded sternly, my power was gone but the anger was still there. He looked up at me, tried to answer but thought better of it and started again.

"I could ask you the same thing" He answered, trying to be bold even though what happened today was enough to wreck anyone. When I realized he wanted an answer, I paused before speaking and lied through my teeth, Molly was the only one there who saw me realise what my "family" had done to me, but I didn't want anyone else to know. I was worried what they'd think of me, I thought they would assume I did something so shitty it made my own mother hate me enough to leave. I think she hated me from birth to be honest. Now both my real parents had run away and all I had was Issy which made me even more desperate to find her.

"Just shaken up" I answered, sitting down next to him. He didn't reply to my answer but just sat there looking outside. Then, after a bit of silence, he spoke.
