[ Chapter Twenty-Two ]

We Will Fight Up Close

Peter got snapped out of his trance by Fury, "Parker? PARKER. That thing is going to be here in a few hours, are we boring you?"

"He's not bored. He's just thinking about how you kidnapped him." Quentin told Fury. "He had obstacles. I removed them." River walked into the room, wearing a new suit she had gotten, it was slightly matching with the shield she had got. The suit was kinda like her old one, a trench coat, but black, then the torso part was red and the rest was black.

Not to mention she also got new fingerless biker gloves.

Can you guess the colour?

Black.

River held the mini shield in her hand, holding on carefully.

"They still won't evacuate the city." River and Fury sighed at what Maria announced.

"Idiots." Her and Fury said in sync.

"So, what's the plan, Parker?" Fury questioned Peter. "I will be in the cathederal tower, keeping watch for the fire monster, and when that shows up, I will radio you guys, and then River, Mr. Beck and I-" "My name is Mysterio." River and Harry blinked.

"That's when River, Mysterio and I will......" River didn't fully listen to Peter.

The plan for Harry was just like Maria and Fury, he was staying there for now.

Fury, Maria, Harry and River all shared the same look with each other.

"Stark gave you a multi-billion dollar AR tactical intelligence system. And the first thing you do with it? Is start blowing up your friends. It's clear to me that you were not ready for this." Fury snapped at Peter, Peter looked down.

River, Harry and Maria also looked down.

River had started talking more with Maria for a while though.

"Maria, this is gonna end okay, right?" She asked, making the adult sigh and look at her. "Look, Ver, I don't know. But I do know this, while you're a lot like your mom, you are you're father's daughter. You and Steve will do whatever it takes to protect people, and go to extreme lengths to make sure people are safe and feel protected. So, I know that you will do everything you can in order to try."

River bit her lip, and tried to forget the thought of people getting hurt, but Maria was right.

She would do whatever it took to help and protect people. And she sure as hell wasn't gonna give up that easily to a fire elemental. And if she had to, she was gonna fight fire with fire.

She was now waiting for the radio from Peter, so she was spinning around in a spinny chair.

Why? Because she's River Becky May-Rogers, that's why. And she can do whatever the hell she wants to do, thank you very much.

River had her suit on and she was still holding the shield in the palm of her hand. "Energy's spiking." Fury said.

Oh shit.

"Okay, he's here!" Peter informed.

River ran as fast as she could out of the building and where she could. She got tired of running so she used her fire to help her fly. Because, yes, she can do that.

"On your left." River said, flying in on Peter's left.

"Dear Castiel, what the f-" She muttered.

"You're up, kid." Mysterio said. "I'm gonna assume you're talking about Peter." River assumed, getting a quick yes from Quentin.

She landed beside Mysterio, fire at the ready, having no idea why she brought the shield, but she did.

River tried to put the fire out, but it wouldn't work, it was weird. Usually she would be able to do that, but this time she couldn't.

"Spider-Man, keep your distance, same with you, Brooklyn Fire." Mysterio advised them. Harry was suddenly allowed to drive a car, thank Castiel he knew how to drive. He followed Fury and Maria's lead.

Something got knocked off, and flew towards an alleyway, but no one there went towards it.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents got out of the cars.

"It's too late." Maria said, making both Harry and River go really quiet.

River was blasted to the ground, we don't really know why. But she got up and walked it off, right over to Harry, who was right by her side.

"So it's over?" Maria asked.

"That was the last of them." "But not the last threat we'll ever face. We need to stay vigilant." Fury stated, going on about him and Maria going somewhere.

"Let's get a drink." Quentin told the three teenagers, but River declined it, and after that, Harry did too.

"You did good, Brooklyn Fire."

"So did you, Agent Osborn." He furrowed his brows, "But I-" "You didn't crash the car." She explained.

I literally just noticed what I did there. Ver (River), then DanVERS (Carol). I-

Also, that little talk between Maria and River. Maria is River's other mom. Let's just say she's got many parents.
