[ Chapter Eight ]

I Just Got Home And Now I'm Headed Up To New York

River, along with everyone else, walked out wearing quantum realm suits.

" Five years ago, we lost. All of us. We lost friends... We lost family... We lost a part of ourselves. Today, we have a chance to take it all back. You know your teams, you know your missions. Get the stones, get them back. One round trip each. No mistakes. No do-overs. Most of us are going somewhere we know. But it doesn't mean we should know what to expect. Be careful. Look out for each other. This is the fight of our lives. And we're gonna win."

Tony gave Steve a look.

Steve then looked at River, "Whatever it takes." She stated.

"Whatever it takes. Good luck." Steve repeated the first sentence.

"He's pretty good at that." Rocket said, referring to Steve. " Right?" Scott agreed, excited.

"All right. You heard the man. Stroke those keys, jolly green." Tony spoke. "Tractors engaged." Bruce responded. "You promise to bring that back in one piece, right?" Rocket asked Clint, addressing the shrunken ship in his hand. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. I'll do my best." Clint promised. "As promises go, that was pretty lame." Rocket replied.

Natasha smiled excitedly, "See you in a minute."

River looked at Natasha, who in return, gave her an encouraging nod.

Flashforward, after they went through tubes to different places.

"All right, we all have our assignments. Two Stones uptown, one Stone, down. Stay low. Keep an eye on the clock." Steve told Scott, Tony, River and Bruce.

"No pressure." River added, deadpanning.

The Hulk from 2012 passed them, smashing things along the way. Bruce put a hand on his face due to embarrassment. "Feel free to smash a few things along the way." Steve told him.

"I think it's gratuitous, but whatever." Bruce said.

"Uh, Mr. Rogers. I almost forgot that that suit did nothing for your ass." Tony said, making River made a face of disgust.

"No one asked you to look, Tony." Steve reminded him.

It was then and there that River honestly realized that she was gonna get her best friend back.

"It's ridiculous." Tony whispered.

"I think you look great, Cap. As far as I'm concerned, that's America's ass." Scott said, giving a patriotic salute. River groaned.

"Who are these guys?" Scott asked as soon as Sitwell, Rumlow and others came into the room.

River sighed, "They're SHIELD...Well, actually Hydra."

"But, we didn't know that yet." Tony finished explaining. "Seriously, you didn't? I mean...they look like bad guys."

"To be fair, I wasn't in this area as of then." River defended herself.

"You're small, but you're talking loud." Tony told Scott.

"There's our stone." River told the two others. "Alright. Flick me." Scott told Tony.

"You promise me you won't die?" Scott questioned.

"You're only giving me a mild cardiac dysrhythmia." Tony said as if it was nothing.

"That doesn't sound mild." River said, looking at Tony.

"Tony, what's going on? Tell me you found that cube." Steve said through the coms. "Oh, you gotta be shitting me." He finished.

"Language!" River exclaimed, laughing to herself quietly.

I wanted to end it there.
