My castle crumbled overnight
I brought a knife to a gunfight
They took the crown, but it's alright
Bucky's life had fallen apart. Not just after Steve left, but after he fell off the train. Most of his life had been stolen from him. He felt unprepared constantly. There was always something new he didn't know anything about. Hydra had stolen his mind, even after he was free. He still had years of his life stolen from him. He wasn't prepared for the new world, for the modern society. He struggled every day, something new bombarding him with terrifying amounts of information. But he was alright.
All the liars are calling me one
Nobody's heard from me for months
I'm doing better than I ever was
Word of who he was had finally gotten out. People were hurt, felt betrayed, but he was just trying to be himself. He wasn't really sure who that was. He disappeared for a while, a long while. He found himself, and along the way found the love of his life: Sam. He was thriving, truly. It was painful at first, the change, but he survived it. The other side felt so much better than where he had started.
My baby's fit like a daydream
Walking with his head down
I'm the one he's walking to
So call it what you want, yeah, call it what you want to
Sam was infatuated with Bucky. He was broken, yet Sam was still the only person he wanted to see. Even at his lowest low, Bucky found Sam. There was judgment, lots of it, but Sam didn't care. He was still the one Bucky chose. When his head was low, hiding from the public, he always found his way to Sam. So, it didn't matter what people said about them. They were perfect.
My baby's fly like a jet stream
High above the whole scene
Loves me like I'm brand new
So call it what you want, yeah, call it what you want to
Sam was Bucky's favorite person. He was perfect, miles beyond most other people in Bucky's life. Sam loved Bucky as if he was whole, not treated him as the broken parts his own self-esteem convinced him of. Their love was something new, it was shiny in comparison to the rust that had built up for years. Sam and Bucky were whatever they wanted to be, free from judgment. They were still harshly critiqued, but they didn't care.
All my flowers grew back as thorns
Windows boarded up after the storm
He built a fire just to keep me warm
Bucky tried to make amends for a lot of the actions he was forced to take as the Winter Soldier. The beauty of his life in the forties was tarnished and dull, lacking the luster he thought it would have. Everything was painful, everywhere there was once beauty there was now anguish. So he locked himself away, hiding from the roaring of his past actions, assuming that if he kept himself isolated, maybe it would be okay. The storm was over, but he still insisted on hiding. Sam never argued with it. He might not have understood and might have given him a bit of crap, but at the end of the day, Sam just wanted him happy. He met Bucky where he was, not asking him to take steps he wasn't ready for, instead making his current situation more comfortable.
All the drama queens taking swings
All the jokers dressin' up as kings
They fade to nothing when I look at him
Everything felt like a threat to Bucky. He was afraid that someone would seek revenge, that his efforts weren't enough. He learned that some of the worst people were the ones who got power, and coping with that was hard. Very hard. Sam was the thing that melted those feelings away. When they were together, Bucky could almost forget how truly shitty the world around them was. He almost forgot the shitty hand he was dealt.
And I know I make the same mistakes every time
Bridges burn, I never learn, at least I did one thing right
I did one thing right
Bucky was never good at amends. He didn't know how to fix anything. He made the same mistakes over and over again, ruining relationships. Most of his friends had turned on him when they found out who he was in his past. They found out where he came from and ran scared. He started to ruin relationships before they could begin, just to save him the pain. But with Sam, he didn't. They were the one thing that when right for Bucky.
I'm laughing with my lover, making forts under covers
Trust him like a brother, yeah, you know I did one thing right
Starry eyes sparkin' up my darkest night
Before Sam, Bucky couldn't remember the last time he laughed. Genuinely, who heartedly laughed. He hadn't acted childish, goofed around, or truly felt a connection until he met Sam. They were so in love, Bucky's life just lit up around him. He trusted Sam with everything, his entire life. It was strange, how Bucky let him in, as he often shut everyone out. Sam was the glimmer of hope in what Bucky felt was otherwise a hopeless situation.
I want to wear his initial
On a chain round my neck, chain round my neck
Not because he owns me
But 'cause he really knows me
Which is more than they can say
A little down the line, Bucky was infatuated with Sam. He couldn't imagine life without him. Bucky disappeared one day, seeming to be doing something incredibly secretive. It made Sam rather anxious, unsure of what Bucky was doing. Why was he gone so long? Was he okay? It wasn't until Bucky got home that his nerves were calmed. They sat on the couch, Bucky reaching into his pocket, fishing out a replica of the dogtags he would've worn in the 40s. Gently, and wordlessly, he placed the tags around Sam's neck. "I can't imagine life without you," he said after a moment. Sam was beyond ecstatic. He lifted the tags from where they lay on his chest, looking from them to Bucky. "Really?" he spoke, before placing a gentle kiss on his lover's lips.
I recall late November, holdin' my breath
Slowly I said, "You don't need to save me
But would you run away with me?"
Yes
Bucky didn't need saving. He had grown stronger, and more confident in himself. His trauma started to become a footnote in the story of his life. He wouldn't have made it as far as he did without Sam. As much as he made it seem like a pain in the ass, he never wanted to be without him. The pair had been strolling Brooklyn, Bucky showing Sam some of the places he grew up in, though they were all very different now. He had seen Sam's childhood home, it was only fair Sam saw his. Bucky was nervous. Sam couldn't tell why, but it all had to do with that little secret from months before. One Bucky kept well. As they walked across a rather scenic part of the city, Bucky took a deep breath, stopping, turning to face Sam as he dropped his hand. Sam looked concerned, worried about what was happening. Bucky took another shaky breath. "I've been planning this for months but I lost all of the words, so fuck it." He reached his hand into his pocket, fishing out a small black box. He got down on his knee, opening the little box to reveal a ring. "Samuel Wilson, will you marry me?" Sam was shocked, but he couldn't help the smile that crossed his face. "Yes." And that was enough. He pulled Bucky back to his feet, placing his lips on the other's as the ring was slipped onto his finger.
