I see the crystal raindrops fall
And the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you sometime
And I wanna spend some time with you
Their shared apartment was the shell of a home. Sam and Bucky thought it best to move in together, for the sake of their own sanity. If they constantly had someone else around, there would be less chance of drastically unhealthy coping mechanisms. Moving on from Steve was hard, especially considering how unexpected it was. Steve had just seemed to adjust to the modern world and suddenly left it. Bucky's old apartment did nothing but remind him of Steve; Memories of the times they shared together were laced into every inch of the space. When Sam asked Bucky if they could move in together, he jumped at the chance. They had barely finished moving in when the rain started; The furniture was still covered in plastic wrapping and many boxes were still left unmoved in the truck. Something about it felt like a fresh start. The rain seemed to start to wash away the pain felt by Steve's departure, and his return. The most hurt came from Bucky, though he tried to hide it from Sam. It broke Sam that Bucky was afraid to be vulnerable. Eventually, Bucky opened up. He didn't talk about his feelings, that wasn't his style. Instead, on that rainy Monday morning, Bucky took Sam by the hand, pulled him down onto the plastic-covered couch, and just curled into his side. He released a sigh, Sam wrapping his arms around Bucky. There were no words shared, but plenty was said.
Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
(Just the two of us)
Just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I
Bucky didn't think he would ever be over Steve. When he finally left Steve in the bar weeks ago, he decided he was ready to move forward in his life with Sam. He felt ready to take steps into solidifying their life together. It took months for Bucky to let Sam in, and even then he was hesitant to open his heart. He was constantly hurt, used, and abandoned by those he trusted. He feared his own mind, what his hands could do, and had done. He wasn't sure he was ready to let Sam hurt him too. Sam never would, not intentionally, and somewhere deep down Bucky knew that. He just couldn't risk it. He didn't trust himself, either. What if he hurt Sam? He wouldn't let himself live it down. In the months it took, Sam was patient. They moved at their own pace, very slowly. One step at a time. They built the life together that Bucky had always dreamed of. Not the one he wanted to share with Steve, but rather a new dream. One that brought joy and love. They built their life together one brick at a time.
We look for love, no time for tears
Wasted water's all that is
And it don't make no flowers grow
Good things might come to those who wait
Not for those who wait too late
We gotta go for all we know
Bucky had learned, or rather was forced to learn, that tears brought him no satisfaction nor relief. Hydra had never let up on his torture for them, and they certainly did not bring Steve back. So, he didn't cry. Or rather, he couldn't. He leaned heavily into Sam, feeling like he had no other choice. It was either Sam or a therapist, and Bucky certainly had a preference. At first, there wasn't necessarily a romantic aspect to their relationship. Bucky was just lonely. Slowly, he fell in love with Sam. Sam let Bucky fall into love at his own pace, never rushing him. Bucky started to push Sam away when realized what he felt. He didn't want to be hurt again. Sam noticed his growing distance and wasn't going to let Bucky shut him out. One day, almost out of the blue, Sam simply went to Bucky and placed their lips together. From then on, they were inseparable.
I hear the crystal raindrops fall
On the window down the hall
And it becomes the morning dew
And darling when the morning comes
And I see the morning sun
I wanna be the one with you
The first night without nightmares came as a shock to Bucky. It had taken months, but Sam eventually coaxed Bucky to sleep in the bed with him. The deal was Bucky would remove the arm, or he would sleep on the floor. Sam agreed. That resulted in a relapse of nightmares that Sam had helped him through. One particular morning, Bucky awoke to the sound of rain. He glanced at the clock, it read 11:30 am. He blinked, sitting up. He looked to his flesh hand, the metal arm sitting in its place on the dresser. Everything was normal. He wasn't having a nightmare, but rather slept peacefully through the night. The rain slowly cleared up, raindrops slowing their descent on the window. Bucky looked to Sam, gently placing a hand on his sleeping lover's back. Sam awoke immediately, careful not to flinch too much at the sudden arousal. He looked to Bucky, quickly sitting up and placing a hand on his thigh.
"What's up, Buck, nightmare again?" Bucky shook his head, smiling softly.
"For the first time, no." Sam laughed in reaction softly, smiling.
"I'm so proud of you." Bucky hadn't heard those words in years, not in any positive light anyways. He couldn't remember the last person who was proud of him for something that wasn't a murder. He smiled brightly, resting his head on Sam's shoulder.
"Sam?"
"Hm?"
"I love you." That was the first time those words had left Bucky's lips in almost 80 years. Sam was taken aback for a moment. In the pause, Bucky lifted his head, almost worried for his reaction. Was it too soon? Did he screw up the only good thing he had left?
"I love you too Bucky."

Let's get it together baby (yeah)
