Harmonica

Catherine saw us first, wincing when she did. I gave her a confused look and she mouthed an "I'm sorry." with a pained look on her face.

I nodded, entwining my fingers with Maggies under that table and giving her hand a firm squeeze.

Catherine sighed in defeat and pointed us out to the two searching women at the door. My mother, the head mistress, and one of my best friends made their way over to our table.

"Addison." my mother snapped once they arrived at the booth, her voice filled with venom.

"Mom, what are you doing here?" I tried to hide the fear in my voice.

"It has come to my attention, that sending you here hasn't helped you get over this little...problem...as well as I thought it would." she began, her tone was snoody and nasal as she looked down at Maggie. "I discovered something through the head mistress here when I called to check on your grades and progress. You are still seeing girls." she said it as if the words disgusted her. "Is this true?"

Maggie gripped my hand under the table as if to tell me it would be okay to lie. I gave her a weak smile, apologizing, telling her it would all be alright, and then addressed my mother, "Yes. I am still seeing girls. This is my girlfriend Maggie." I smiled proudly at her.

"Very well then, you'll return home. Lets go pack you things." my mother said, triumph in her voice and I felt my heart shatter.

"No. I'm not going home. This is my home now. This is where my family is." I began to argue.

"Kate, don't be ridiculous, these...sinners are not your family." she growled back.

"Don't call them sinners like you're not one yourself. Everyone commits sin, you are doing it right now by judging me when God is the one who judges, you are the one who is hating me when you have taught me all my life that hate is a sin!" I started to stand up, my anger boiling.

"Kate. We're leaving. Now you can go easily, or I can have you escorted out." the head mistress stepped in.

"Oh shut up you heartless vertically challenged woman! You're not even tall enough to understand this situation!" those angry words came from Adrian.

"Watch yourself Ms. Carlson, I do not tolerate that type of attitude in my school." the head mistress countered.

"Kate, don't make a scene." my mother growled.

"Mrs. Anderson, I understand that you don't want to hear from me," Maggie slowly stood up as if asking my mother permission to speak, "but I would like to say, I love your daughter. She makes me very happy and my happiness may not matter to you, but as a parent, Kates happiness should mean the world. I think, if I can speak for Kate, that I make her very happy. I would never do anything to hurt your daughter and I sure as hell wouldn't let anyone else hurt her. Excuse my language. Isn't that what matters?" Maggie finished her speech, causing me to gaze at her with love in my eyes.

"No! This is disgusting! All of you are horrible people! We're leaving." My mother screamed, and with that she grabbed my wrist and drug me away, kicking and screaming.

The head mistress helped her pull me to the dorm, leaving Catherine standing with the a fuming Adrian, a scared silent Alice, and a sobbing Maggie. I could've taken them. I could've fought them both off and caused more trouble but it wouldn't have helped me in the long run so I let them take me with only a small struggle.

When we got to the dorm my mother yanked a suitcase from under the bed and started throwing stuff in it. I stared off blankly into space. I knew she would take away my phone, put me on lock down and never allow me back here.

I would never see Maggie again.

"Let's go." my mother growled and I suddenly felt panicked. I needed to see her, kiss her, hold her one more time. I needed let her to know that if she waited until I turned eighteen in a few months, I would come back for her. I might be poor and cut off but I would come back for her.

"Kate." my mother snapped again when I didn't move.

I grabbed a sharpie off the dresser, not caring about property damage or whatever trouble this could get me in. With the sharpie, I scrawled "Love you, all of you, Maggie" on the dresser top quickly.

"What the hell are you doing?" my mother frowned, grabbing me roughly by the arm without seeing what I had written.

The next few hours were a blur, but I eventually ended up in my room at home. I havn't seen my dad since I got home but I know he's still here because I heard him talking with Satan.

No, my dad is not a devil worshiper, I was referring to my mother.

I've been here three days.

I started making scratches in the hardwood on my bedroom floor just so I'll know. I really need a harmonica to be the icing on the cake.

"Kate." my mothers voice at the door startled me.

"We already ate dinner." I reminded her blandly.

She's been doing this horrible thing where she makes me have a sit down dinner with her every afternoon. Like seriously, who does such a thing to their kids?!

"I was just coming in to tell you, your personal tutor will start tomorrow. Maybe homeschooling can keep you away from all those...well you know." she said the last part quietly and closed the door.

There it was, my stomach dropped.

If I was being homeschooled, I was never leaving this house again.

Don't think I havn't tried my hardest to get out of here. I havn't just sat around feeling sorry for myself. I tried the window, pad locked from the outside. I tried to sneak out the door but Mom is a very light sleeper and is now sleeping on the couch to prevent me from escaping. She took away all my technology.

There's no way out.
