It was a warm, not hot enough to wear shorts but not cool enough to need a sweater, day in mid-May. Amelia decides she wanted to go for a walk in the nice weather. For about forty five minutes she walked the main street of her little town, stopping to look in little stores and boutiques and ended up talking to the people who owned them. She got tired so she decided to try and find a place to sit. Amelia came across a black metal bench, formed in a circle with a tree in the center. She was a bit confused because she had never seen this bench before so it must be new. There was a sign on the tree so she went up to it and began reading. "THE HAPPY TO CHAT BENCH" the sign read. Intrigued, she continued "sit here if you wouldn't mind someone stopping by to say hello". "What a lovely idea" she murmured to herself. There was no one else there but she sat upon the bench anyway. After about five minutes when nobody sat down she had just gotten up and was beginning to walk away, when she heard footsteps behind her. "You don't want to talk to me?" the person who was walking up to her asked in a kind, joking manner. As she turned around the mysterious stranger outstretched their hand. "My name's Riley" they said. "Amelia. No, I was leaving because there was no one to talk to. But now that you're here I will stay". They both sat back down on the bench and talked for almost an hour. Riley's phone started to ring. They picked it up and realized it was their boss. "Shit i'm late for work. Sorry Amelia I have to go". "That's okay. This was fun though. We should meet up again sometime soon". "Yeah actually that would be great" Riley exclaimed. They exchanged numbers then Riley left. When the day started Amelia wasn't expecting to meet someone new but she's glad she did. The town she recently moved back to was small and there weren't that many people her age. As soon as they could all the young people left to go to college and never looked back. Riley seemed like a good person and Amelia was glad she had found someone to be friends with. But there was something she didn't know. Her newfound friend was actually an old one.
