She didn't know how long she ran for. Whether it was minutes, hours or days. No one came after her and she didn't stop. The night sky faded as the sun rose up and Mia let out a breath.
Cait was dead.
And it was her fault. And it wasn't. It was the vampire's fault. The Volturi, Santiago, the Cullens, Bella. It was all of their faults and then it was also Mia's.
How could it not be? The only reason her friend was dead was because Santiago had seen them fighting that day at school. Why did it happen? Mia was following the rules, Sam's rules, and what did he say? It was supposed to keep humans safe. It didn't.
The pack's purpose, Mia's purpose was to keep the humans safe. The whole reason the pack existed was because of that sole reason, protection against the enemy. Leeches. It didn't matter whether they lived on the other side of the treaty line, their responsibility was to stop the enemy from hurting people. And she had failed.
Her best friend was dead. She couldn't protect her. All the hurting she caused her friend to protect her was now meaningless. What was the point of cutting her out of her life to protect her if she ended up dead? Fucking dead.
Cait. Caitlyn. The first person who befriended her in this town. People of Forks weren't that used to newcomers, people didn't usually leave there and new people didn't come there. Especially from big cities like Seattle.
At the beginning of freshman year, Mia was scared. She had been raised in the city, everyone she knew was back there. She was used to traffic, and noise, and crowds. She was used to having hundreds of people in her year. She was used to taxis, and subways, and rush hour.
And Forks was neither of those things. Everyone knew each other, there was a little city center where you could go for any kind of entertainment. There was only one bookstore, a couple of cafes. The closest movie theater was thirty minutes away.
Cait was the first person to reach out. On that first day where they were both late to the class and the teacher made her sit next to Cait and Olivia. She wouldn't have a problem with seating if it was back in Seattle, her school there was large enough for new students.
Everyone kept giving looks at her, some whispering. It had been that way since she stepped foot in school. She didn't feel confident enough to ask anyone where the class was supposed to be under all the looks.
And then there was Cait who just grinned at her and said 'Everyone has a hard time on their first day, don't worry about it. I've lived here my whole life and I'm still late.'Olivia had chuckled and said that Cait was always late.
It had taken the tension off of Mia's shoulders. She had given out a small smile. Then Cait asked for her class schedule and offered to show her where all the classes were supposed to be. Even the ones they didn't have together. And then she dragged her to her table in lunch, saying she wouldn't let her sit alone.
Those little offers of walking her to class had become offers to go grab a coffee in a couple of days. Coffee's became seeing movies and eating out and they eventually became sleepovers.
Before she knew it, the girl who came to a little town only knowing her mom and a grandmother she had seen a couple of times had friends, two best friends. Best friends that did everything together, reading books all night, watching movies and TV shows together, tried to learn how to apply make-up online, and failing hilariously.
Their memories together were flashing inside her mind. The day when they kidnapped Jack's car when Olivia got her driving license, the day Jack rained the hose down on them when they were acting out a scene from a book in their backyard, the trio costumes for Halloween, the first time they got drunk.
