Bondita stopped on hearing a call from behind. She gulped in nervousness and very slowly turned back, only to find Trilochan Kaka standing with his chhadi in his hand and a grave expression on his face. Not knowing what to do, Bondita smiled at him timidly. She felt like running away from there but she knew, she couldn't.
"Kahan gyi thi subah-subah?" He asked after finishing his glaring session.
"Main?" She pointed to herself.
"Nhi, tumhare peeche khada bhoot." Kaka replied, whereupon Bondita looked behind immediately. In the meantime, Bihari came rushing down the stairs.
"Par ye toh Bihari babu hain?" She asked Kaka innocently.
"Lo, humare chidiya ghar mein ek aur janwar shamil hogya." Kaka mumbled, dropping him forehead onto his hand.
"Kuch kaha aapne Kaka sasur ji?" Asked Bondita meekly.
"Nhi-nhi humne kahan kuch kaha." He uttered with a contemptuous laugh but soon his expression changed to a serious one again. "Arey kaise andh-shand sawal kar rhi ho bahu? Jo poocha hai uska uttar do." He roared stamping his chhadi on the floor. Bondita wondered what excuse should she make. "Arey bolo bhi, ya muh mein dahi jama rakkhi hai?" Kaka prompted.
"Aa wo Kaka sasur ji...wo main...main..." Fidgeting with her saree's pallu, she noticed Binoy entering the hall and an idea struck her mind. "Haan!" She cried happily. "Main na Sasur ji ke factory ke kuch kagazi karyavayi ke liye court gyi thi." Saying, she breathed a sigh of relief. "Bach gyi Bondita!" She thought. But the relief on her face was shortlived. It vanished as soon as she saw Binoy approaching them.
Shoving his darling specs up his nose, he started, "Bondita" he addressed her, "Kal jo maine tumhe factory ke papers diye the unhe mujhe wapas kardo, waise bhi aaj..."
"Ye sab kya hai Binoy?" He was interrupted by his Daa in the middle.
"Kya Daa?"
"Arey bahu ko ghar aaye kuch din hue nhi, aur tumne usey bahar ke kaam ki zimmedari de di? Arey, iss ghar ki badi bahu hone ke naate, iss parivaar ke prati bhi toh uske kuch kartavya hain!"
"Par Daa maine toh bas usey..."
"Aaj hi lelo, tumhare diye gye kaam ki wajah se bahu subah-subah ghar ka saara kaam-dham chorkar nyayalay chali gyi! Tum hi batao Binoy, agar bahu ghar ka kaam nhi karegi, toh kya hum aur tum karenge?" His words made Binoy's brows to furrow.
"Ek min, Bondita aaj court gyi thi?" He asked looking at both of them simultaneously. Bondita nodded straight away in agreement. "Par aaj toh ravivaar (Sunday) hai, court toh band hoga na?" And this realization made Bondita gulp. Sweat formed on her forehead and her palms also became sweaty. How could you forget that Bondita? She mentally scolded herself but she knew, there was no use of crying over the spilt milk. But now she has to think of something in order to fix this. She also noticed Trilochan Kaka glowering at her. His face indicated that he needed her answers without further ado.
Wiping her forehead's sweat, she began, "Haan, court toh band tha."
"Phir tum wahan kya karne gyi thi?" Kaka asked at once.
"Main wo...main wo...main..." She stared at the floor, looking for an excuse.
"Arey kuch bologi bhi, ya bas bakri ki tarah'main-main' hi karti rahogi? Her silence was irritating him now.
"Kaka sasur ji main...main bhool gyi thi ki court band hai aaj...isiliye..." She fumbled being nervous.
"Kya?" Kaka asked in disbelief. "Tum Barrister hi ho na? Nhi, humara matlab hai ki, tum kaise bhool gyi?"
