A brief nap and a snack later found them sitting up in bed and ready to face the dreaded conversation again. Once more, Severus took a deep breath and faced his bondmate.

“Harry, the Xaviers are a very important family in the vampire world. Like it or not, you, and I will be drawn into that world when you reach your majority, twenty-one. The world of the Bloodkin is a harsh and beautiful one. How much do you know about it?”

“It’s harsh and beautiful?” stated Harry wryly.

Severus stared at him. “That’s all? This is going to be harder than I thought.”

“Sev’rus, I understand that there’s something that I should know, but obviously don’t, and you’re hesitant to tell me what it is. Just tell me, we’ll deal with the consequences later.”

Still hesitant, unwilling to lay the extra stress and concern on his mate, the older man reached over to lay a comforting hand on Harry’s leg.

“Alright then. The Bloodkin have been ruled by one ancient family for eons. The last known child of the royal family was killed recently, leaving the succession in question. The King and Queen are old, and the people are worried that should something happen to them, there would be civil war.”

“Wait, wait. I’m having a Trelawney moment.” Harry flung his arm up to his forehead and continued. “I sense that the name of this family begins with a V…no, no, an X … and that there is a child…a son…”

Despite the obvious irritation coming from Harry, Severus sniggered at his accurate depiction of the eccentric seer. “Your powers of divination are amazing Harry. But yes, you’re right. Despite your less-than-pure blood, you are the sole heir to the Xavier throne. On your majority your name will appear in the Hall of Ancients, and the Bloodkin will know that you truly exist. Right now, there are only rumors of a lost Prince. Many of the lesser families, including my own, are searching for you. If you were to die before your twenty-first birthday, the crown would pass from the Xavier family for the first time in millennia. All the lesser families would rise up in the hopes of seizing the crown for themselves. There will be civil war amongst the Bloodkin. It will be worse than the war with the Dark Lord.”

Harry was silent as he stared at the ceiling. He could feel the weight of two worlds crushing down on him, forcing the shape of his destiny upon him. Something caught his attention. “Wait…your family?”

Severus caught the underlying question in Harry’s tone. “Harry, look at me.” He waited until he had the young man’s full attention. “When we bonded, I became part of your family. My allegiance is to you and you alone. My father and I…don’t see eye to eye. Even if we did; as your a’ashi, I will support your decisions.”

“I don’t want a shay’en, Severus Salazar Snape,” snapped Harry abruptly. “Your will is your own.”

“Yes Harry, it is, but you are my la’aka. That means that while I have my own opinions, I will defer to you in most cases, but will always offer my guidance and support. If I feel strongly enough about a matter, I will most certainly not hesitate to bring it to your attention.” His young mate stared at him for a moment as he assessed the truth behind the words. Severus was startled when laughter abruptly burst from his mate.

“There’s no way that Severus Salazar Snape would meekly consent to doing anything that he didn’t want to. Forgive me Sev’rus. I would not change you for all of Merlin’s magic.”
