Without thinking, I drop all my books and immediately run to a classroom that's been abandoned for the last two months. Some sort of mold thing happened in there.
Now we use it as a classroom in case of emergencies which makes no sense because it's so gross.
\I hear Mrs. Fiona yell from the class that I am being uncivilized and immature, but it doesn't matter what she thinks, I have a tail to deal with.
I can barely make it through the door without losing my two feet.
"Whoa!" I splat on the ground with my face hitting the floor.
"Ow!" I say grumpily.
I roll upward onto my back and sigh. I really have to get rid of this thing. It's getting in the way of everything and not even an hour passed by.
Answers. That's all I need to find out why this fin is attached to my body. After a few minutes, I feel my legs growing back again. Getting up off the floor, I brush off the dust that is attached to my clothes.
I walk out and close the door to the empty classroom behind me. That was a close one. So, now I know another thing about the mermaid tail, it disappears after about five to ten minutes. This is good that I figured this out on my own.
I still need to find out more about what is happening to me.
This whole thing is freaking me out and if anyone finds out, I'm totally toast. Who wants a dangerous looking girl with a tail on the loose?
"What should I do?" I say softly beside the hallway wall.
It is almost lunch, so maybe I can leave and go somewhere quiet to try and figure this out. I walk to the end of the hall, near the exit door, and leave.
Once the fresh air hits my skin, I almost forget about the very complicated situation I'm in. Almost. Where to go first?
Maybe the beach near my house? It's usually quiet there during this time of the day.
I really have no other option right now, so I head towards the beach. I will do anything to find out more about what I've become.
The walk back to my house is peaceful, as always but I never realize how many people offer you samples of different foods and drinks.
The shops are all giving away samples of food but I politely say no.
I don't feel like eating away my feelings because I'm afraid that if I touch something that is wet, then my fin will grow back again.
Once I reach the beach, I grab a towel from my house and walk down to a quieter place where no one can see me transform. The beach is basically deserted but I want to be extra safe.
Okay, this is the moment of truth Melody. You can do this. I touch the water with my hands and feel the tingles from my fingers travel down to my feet.
Splash! I flop onto the water and feel the sand beneath me start to move. The water begins to move me deeper into the ocean.
"Help! Help! Help me! I can't swim with this thing!" I yell.
Silence. I sink down more into the deep dark waters and think, I'm going to die.
This tail is super heavy and I can't move at all. Suddenly, a creature appears. I can't quite see it, but it looks like it is starving for my meat.
Okay, breathe Melody, breathe. Wait, huh? I'm breathing underwater. How-?
"It's because the scales on your mermaid tail help you breathe," a mysterious voice says as if it's reading my mind.
"What, who said that? Show yourself," I demand, yet terrified.
A bright orange seahorse appears from the dark waters and looks at me discouragingly.
"My goodness. This is what the king left for me to take care of. My, my this will not do. What have you been doing your whole life? Have you ever looked at yourself? Why, you're hideous! Nothing like the king and queen. My, they were much more suited for the sea than you'll ever be," the orange seahorse babbles as he looks at me disapprovingly.
What the hell? I can't focus on anything he says until I figure out what's going on.
"Um, excuse me but how are you even talking? You're a seahorse," I say to the sea animal while also trying to convince myself this is really happening.
"Oh, sorry dear. My name is Bubbles and I've been sent on a mission to help you on your journey to defeating Angelica, the Siren," he informs me.
"Angelica the Siren? What's a siren? How are you talking? Why do I have this tail? How come I can breathe underwater? What-," I babble.
"Darling, shush! You will find more about that later. But for now..." he states but I cut him off.
"No. I need to figure out what's going on right now. Answer my questions or I will not do as you tell me to," I command.
"Hmm. I guess I was wrong about you. Fine. Let's make a deal then, sweetheart. I answer your questions, and you join me on a quest to defeat the siren. Alright?"
"Okay, deal," I tell him.
Bubbles nods his head and looks at me with seriousness.
"You must know that this quest is dangerous and you'll see many terrifying things out there," he says, gesturing farther in the ocean.
I give a simple nod and ask, "How did you answer my question before?"
"Oh, that. Well, I can read anyone that lives in the ocean's mind. Everyone in the ocean has powers. Which reminds me, we need to find out what yours is."
Powers? Really? What kind of world is this?
"It's called the ocean, sweetheart," Bubbles answers.
Man, that's going to be really annoying. I won't even be able to keep anything from him.
"Yup, that's correct."
I roll my eyes.
"So, are you going to answer my questions yet?" I ask Bubbles.
"Well, since I can read your mind, I already know what you're going to ask so it'll save us some time." he informs.
"Alright, so I don't even have to ask it out loud?"
"Nope. Now, let me start from the beginning."
