Five sat in his office, staring at the wall. Next to them sat a cat with gray fur, and light gray markings.
"Five, why do we hide away like this?" The gray cat asked, their violet-gray eyes dim. "We've been over this, Eight. They don't want to see us, and I can't risk letting them see my... experiments." Five replied. Eight sighed and hung their head, defeated. Five walked over to their sleeping corner and laid down, closing their eyes and slipping into a dream of memories.
Five, Four, X, Eight, and some other numbers were playing around near a lake, their laughs of joy seemed to fill the air. "Got you!" Five said, giving Eight a friendly tap on the shoulder. Eight looked at Four as Five charged away, not trying to get caught. Five let out a sigh of relief when Eight started to charge after Four. They stood for a second, catching their breath. They started to zone out but were snapped out of their mind when they felt a tap on the shoulder. They looked over and saw Four running off. They giggled and started to run after X, who was closest. X ran out onto the dock, Five following in close pursuit, then X turned and started to run back towards Five. Five started to skid, trying to stop, but the dock was slippery and they kept sliding, towards the water. Fear gripped them like icy claws as they started to panic, trying to dig their claws into the dock, but their claws just scraped across the wood, and then they felt the dock fall away, and then cold water engulfed them. Five was holding their breath, and their eyes flew open, the sunlight blurry against the surface of the water as they sunk. They hopelessly flailed their paws, and their lungs started to ache, the cold water around them biting at their skin. They didn't know how to swim, so they kept sinking. Water had filled their nose, eyes, and ears. They then heard the muffled sound of splashing water, and saw a blurry gray figure above them. They finally gave up and let the air escape their lungs, water-filled their mouth as their jaws opened, and they panicked and tried to gasp in more air, but all they got was water. The world around them started to fade away, the noises, and feelings. They started to slip away, and didn't notice the feelings of someone grabbing them by the back of the neck, and hauling them back to the surface.
Five awoke to the sound of panicked voices. They felt horrible. Their lungs and legs ached, and they had a headache. They looked around, and saw Eight frantically talking to Six. "They just, fell in the water! I had to save them!" Eight said, their tone angry. "You could have died!" Six yelled, worry sparking in her gaze. Five felt the beginnings of jealousy stir in their belly. "Could of, Five WOULD have!" Eight yelled. Five got up.
"Five!" Eight said, their voice full of relief. Five smiled, and felt their face heat up. "Thank you for saving me." Five said, and then the rest was simply a blur, Five couldn't remember.
Five awoke to the sound of soft sobbing. They got up and walked towards the sound, finding Eight looking into one of the rooms, crying. In the room was a cat with teal fur and an amber eye. They had cuts and scratches all over their body, and they were hissing and spitting. From their mouth dripped black liquid, which left marks on the floor. Their left eye was acid green, with acid rolling down their face like tears. Five sighed, Eight still hadn't gotten over Six.
"You should get sleep." Five said. Eight nodded and got up, and Five guided them to their bed before walking away and out of the lab.
Five stood outside, fresh air filling their lungs. They tried to think of days from long ago, but all that they could remember was when they came to the lab, nothing before. Then, they heard the soft sound of paws landing on the fallen leaves. They felt panic rising in them, and unsheathed their claws. Then they saw her, Leafy, walking through the forest, humming to herself. Memories rushed past Five, memories from 12 years ago. Leafy had been a small kitten, curious and loving, kind and social. Five snapped back to the present, Leafy was too close to their lab. They braced themself, drowning out any and every inch of guilt or hesitance. Then, they leaped at the green-furred cat. Leafy let out a shriek as Five landed on her, pinning her to the ground. Five's heart basically broke at her loud cry for help, but he stomped it out. Remorse got you nowhere, they had learned that long ago. They were doing this for a reason. Then they stopped as they were about to land a killing blow. What was their reason? Why had they killed or harmed others? For a stupid show? Then they remembered how quickly Four had left, and without saying goodbye. Anger overwhelmed them, and they snapped back into the present. Their paw swiped through the air, a slight whoosh reached Five's ears. Then at the last moment, they felt a wave of guilt wash over them, and stumbled, missing the blow, and instead clawed the ground. They had no reason for this. They had killed others over something so silly. They had hurt their own sibling. They had hurt Six. They had hurt Eight. They had hurt so many others, for no reason. They looked at Leafy, crouched close to the ground. They couldn't kill her, they couldn't. They would never forgive themself if they did.
"Go, and tell no one you saw me." Five said, surprisingly soft. Leafy charged off, crashing through the forest, and Five watched, they had let someone getaway. A fit of new anger sparked within them. They wouldn't spare the next person they saw, they would do what they had been doing for years. They walked back to their lab, and then down the hall, where there was the noise of the whirring of engines and the dripping of some kind of liquid.
