The piercing above her navel sparkled as she took one last look at herself in the body length mirror, grabbing her bag and walking down the stairs to meet her grandmother in the kitchen.
The smell of blueberry muffins filled the kitchen, along with a jug of freshly squeezed orange juice.
"Good morning, honey. Hurry up now, Saki's outside," she said, putting a paper bag with a muffin and a bottle of OJ in Ameera's hands. Dropping a kiss on her grandmother's cheek, she rushed outside to the black vehicle her best friend was not so patiently waiting in.
"Why are you always late?" Saki voiced before she even closed the car door.
"I woke up late, sorry." Smiling innocently at the woman beside her, the white artificial colour of her hair complimenting the baby blue shirt she had on. Saki playful slapped her on the arm before starting the car. They had been best friends since the day meet in elementary school.
Eleven-year-old Ameera watched as her books fell to the ground, tears welling up in her eyes. The culprit, a chubby privileged little white boy laughed as he teased her. "No one wants you here, freak. Go back to your old school."
Her little fists balled up together, and the tears she tried so hard to hold back slid down her cheeks in silence. She could feel the stares of the other students on her, and she wanted to run, but her little feet stayed rooted to the ground.
"Hey, knock it off!"
The strong command came from behind, surprising Ameera. She was used to people ignoring scenarios like this, even the teachers. But there came her princess in shining armour, Murasaki Yuu.
She smiled remembering what was probably one of the best days of her life. As cliche as it seemed, Murasaki was like her other half; she helped her through a lot and supported her in whatever she did.
"-and Anthropology is my last lecture, so can you do that for me?"
Shaking out of her trance, Ameera asked Saki to repeat what she had said.
"I'm supposed to pick up Sumi from a play date at her friend's house, but I have a late class. Could you pick her up if you're not busy?"Sumi, short for Mitsumi, was Saki's younger sister. She was around seven or eight if Ameera recalled correctly. A total sweetheart she was, and since Ameera had nothing to do at that time, she agreed.

2:15 pm.
Her eyes were glued to the clock as she listened to the old hag go on and on about something irrelevant. She was being reprimanded for her attendance, or lack thereof, in the woman class. She didn't understand what the problem was, seeing that her attendance didn't affect her grades; as long as she submitted her assignments. Mrs Ellis was the only teacher who had a problem with that.
She had worked tenaciously for this scholarship and was not going to let it go to waste.
"Ms Ellis, I need to go. We can continue this unnecessary conversation later," she interrupted the woman, walking away. Ms Ellis stuttered stupidly as she watched the young woman walk out, Ameera chuckled. What was she going to do, stop her?

She could hear the humming of the car's engine as she looked at the large house before, glancing at the address she was given to confirm if she was at the right house. The neighbourhood that she was in was obviously very rich, judging from the unnecessarily big houses to the cars on the sidewalk. She walked up to the house that matched the address she got; pressing the doorbell.
Not a moment later a woman, who she assumed was the maid because of her attire, came to the door.
"Hello? I'm here to pick up Mitsumi."
The woman gave her a sceptical look before recognition crossed her face. "Ah yes, Ms Yuu call and told me you would come. Come in."
Ameera slowly followed the now confirmed maid, who she learned was Emily, her eyes scanning the exquisite interior of the house. Still following Emily, she found herself in a huge bedroom with two little girls playing; a ton of toys surrounding them.
Emily walked away, leaving her with them. "Sumi? Do you want to introduce me to your friend?" she smiled softly, walking towards them.
Said child's eye lit up, immediately rushing towards Ameera.
"Meera! What are you doing here?" Ameera went to answer but was interrupted by Sumi, "it doesn't matter. This is my friend, Dika, short for Rahdika."
Rahdika, who was a short little kid who looked like a cute mushroom, walked up to Ameera. She stuck out her little hand for a handshake, "You look like my doll." She smiled, a small gap between her front teeth.
"Really," Ameera continued, "can I see it?"
The little girl ran over to her dresser where a variety of dolls sat. Running back, she presented a dark-skinned doll with an afro, a pretty shade of pink gloss on her plump lips. Huh, it did look like her, kind of.
"You're really pretty, can you stay and play with us, pretty please?" Dika chirped, her grey eyes filled with hope.
She glanced at the time, then back to the two children waiting for her response. Fuck it, she thought, it's not like she had anything important to attend to.
"Just a little bit, okay?"
~
A little bit turned into a lot. She was sprawled out on her stomach as both Sumi and Rahdika sat on her back. She was supposed to be their pony but got tired after 10 minutes of crawling around on her knees. Deep breaths came from her as she spoke, "Okay, timeout please."
Both girls giggled deviously before releasing their whole weight on top of her. "Help, man down! I repeat, man down!"
Caught up in their own world of giggles and laughs, none of them realized the person at the doorway until a throat was cleared. Rahdika let out a gasp before running over, "Daddy, you're home."
Swiftly getting up, her eyes made four with the last person she expected to see.
Pastor Smith.
